Vandals strike
three synagogues
Juden Verrecket (Jews are
crazy) read the ugly sign in
misspelled German smeared across
the doors of Temple Or Olom in
Miami. Beneath it was a large
swastika.
The desecration took place
Saturday night April 22, at the
South Dade synagogue, where
vandals also shattered stained
glass windows and broke down
doors.
The occurrence, on the second
night of Passover, prompted Ted
Sloan, president of Temple Or
Olom, to take his time about
cleaning up.
This was the same reaction of
Rabbi Dov Bidmck at Sky Lake
Synagogue on Sunday night, when
vandals etched swastikas and the
letters, H-I-T-L-E-R, on his
station wagon
“I am ashamed to think that
some of our neighbors would do
this,” Rabbi Bidnick declared,
referring to the North Miami
Beach community in which his
orthodox congregation is located
In Rabbi Bidnick's view, the
Holocaust, a four-part television
series, provoked the incident.

and he wanted people to be able to
see it.
Both Dade synagogues were not
the first attacked. That “honor”
was accorded Temple Ohel B’nai
Raphael in Lauderdale Lakes in
Broward County on Wednesday.
April 19, two nights before the first
Seder and the night of the final
Holocaust episode showing.
At Temple Ohel B’nai Raphael,
swastikas and the word.
Auschwitz, had been spray-
painted on the temple's walls.
“We deplore this act of
vandalism, which only testifies to
the fact that there are sick people in
society, and there are anti-Semites
in society, too,” said Irving L.
Geisser, executive director of the
Greater Fort Lauderdale Jewish
Federation.
Speaking of Sky Lake
Synagogue's occurrence. Rabbi
Bidnick said that “it could be a
malicious prank, an unthinking
prank, but then again it could also
be the seeds of some deep anti-
Semitic feelings."
At Temple Or Olom, President
Sloan said he was in no hurry to
clean up because he wanted the
children of the congregation to see
what had occurred when they
arrived for Religious School
classes on Sunday morning.
“The community response has
been overwhelming,” he said,
adding (hat Jews and Gentiles
alike volunteered their services to
restore Temple Or Olom.
Sloan explained that the Temple
was flooded with calls and visited
by many sympathizers, including
many Christians, who stopped by
after church services on Sunday
and volunteered to help
According to Sloan, some
$10,000 in damage was to be
repaired this week
“The physical damage (hat can
be taken care of.” he said. “The
emotional damage that's going
to take some time to repair." In his
view. “Maybe we'll all be stronger
for it in the long run."
