Chaim Herzog to address
international women’s group
Community service programs
for the single parent, the aging and
the family in crisis are on the
Friday morning schedule, chaired
by Edith Nobel of London.
Following this, there will be a tour
of Atlanta's Jewish Home.
Pamela Joseph of South Africa
will lead a presentation on “ICJW
in Israel” at 1:45 p.m. Friday, at
the Jewish Home.
Sherry Frank of Atlanta,
chairperson of the convention, has
scheduled a Sh’losh Seudot for 5
p.m. Saturday. Mrs. Frank was
president of the Atlanta Section
from 1973-75 and has served on the
Southern District board since that
time, as well as on national NCJW
committees.
Dr. David R Blumenthal,
professor of Judaic Studies at
Emory University, will speak at the
plenary on “Jewish Education” at
8:45 a.m. Sunday, with emphasis
on Jewish education for adults.
Sunday’s luncheon speaker will
be Avraham Harman, president of
Hebrew University of Jerusalem
since 1968. Prior to that, Harman
was Israel’s Ambassador to
Washington.

Several hundred concerned and
involved women from around the
world will gather in Atlanta next
week for the Triennial Convention
of the International Council of
Jewish Women. Atlanta Section,
National Council of Jewish
Women is hosting the five-day
conference at the Terrace Garden
Inn, from May 17-21.
The international organization,
founded in 1912, dedicated to
human rights and welfare in the
Jewish and general communities,
has over 1,000,000 members
represented by affiliates in 30
countries.
Countries represented at the
convention include Argentina,
Australia, Belgium, Brazil,
Canada, Chile, Ecuador, England,
France, Germany, Hong Kong,
India, Iran, Israel, Italy,
Luxembourg, Mexico, New
Zealand, South Africa, Sweden,
Switzerland, United Kingdom,
Uruguay, U.S.A., and Venezuela.
Chaim Herzog, Israel’s
ambassador to the United Nations
will address the opening banquet
at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the
Standard Club.
Thursday’s schedule includes a
noon program chaired by Ann
Robison on “ICJW and
Voluntarism,” with reports of
delegates from New Zealand,
India, South Africa, Brazil and
Iran.
At 2:45 Thursday, Pnina Herzog
of Israel, ICJW vice president, will
lead a discussion on “World
Perspective on the Status of
Women.” Ms. Herzog is a
pharmaceutical chemist and serves
as liaison between the Inter
national Council of Women and
the World Health Organization.
“United Nations Update” is the
presentation for Wednesday
evening, chaired by Phyllis
Rosenfeld.
Delelgate from India
heads ORT school
Attending the ICJW
conference from Bombay,
India, is Ms. Sophia S. Corley,
who is director of the ORT
India Girls’ School in Bombay.
Ms. Corley was the first Jewish
student to specialize in
community welfare work at
Bombay’s Tata School of
Social Work, from which she
was graduated in 1944.
She has been a voluntary
social worker with the Bene-
Israel community since 1946
where she has been associated
with the Bene-Israel Orphan
age, several synagogues, and
the Bene-lsrael Stree Mandal.
With special interest in
nutrition, Ms. Corley worked

with the Maharashtra
Government (Department of
Medical and Social Welfare) to
promote health through
nutrition.
Herzog Dra. Herczeg Harman
Eleanor Marvin of Woodmere,
N.Y., immediate past national
president of NCJW, will be
installed president of International
NCJW Sunday evening at the
closing banquet at the Peachtree
Plaza Hotel. Mrs. Marvin has
served at many levels of NCJW
leadership. Under her leadership,
NCJW published the book
“Children Without Justice,” a
report on the organization's study
of the juvenile justice system. In
1975, she was awarded the Torch
of Learning Award by the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.
Dra. Rosa S. de Herczeg,
concluding her second three year
term as president, is a member of a
Hungarian Jewish family in
Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Atlanta Section members
coordinating the convention
include Marilyn Shubin, advisor;
Sherry Frank, chairman; Helene
Sowerby, public relations and
administration; Carole Goldberg,
hospitality and volunteers; and
Sara Deitch, arrangements.
