Apology for
offensive float
TORONTO, (JTA)???The
chairman of the Canada Dry
celebration ia Newcastle, New
Brunswick, has issued an apology
to the public for his committee???s
failure to prohibit the inclusion of
an anti-Semitic float in the two-
mile parade featured at the festival
earlier this month.
The float publicized the anti-
Semitic book, ???Web of Deceit," by
Malcolm Ross, a school teacher in
Moncton, New Brunswick. The
book warns that Canada is being
undermined by a conspiracy of
Jews and Communists which are
infiltrating the country???s financial
institutions, schools and the
media. Both the chairman of the
parade. Councilor Timothy
McCarthy, and the parade
marshall, Tom Morris, said
afterwards they did not know who
sponsored the float.

It was written with humor. It was
the First funeral I had been to
where people burst out laughing.
That???s probably the way she would
have wanted it," he said.
And so between memories of
hit grandmother and medical
school, Shulman had ample
material to write a book.
???Writing the book was
therapeutic for me. Sometimes
school gets tough and it helped me
get away from it. Also I was always
Finding good material," he said.
How did the people at Emory
University react to his writing a
"humorous" book about medical
school?
???I got positive response. It was
intended as a funny and
entertaining book. No one was
identified and I changed
everyone???s name. The type of
humor I have in the book is more
self-inflicted. I make more fun of
myself than anyone else. I should
be the Fuat person to sue," he said.
Dr. Shulman finished his book
in two years and it was published in
1976.
???There's been some talk of other
things, like movie rights, but that???s
still in exploratory stages," he said.
Dr. Shulman is with the
Department of Internal Medicine
at Emory University, mainly
The parade entry consisted of a
small car with three banners which
read: ???Figlit Truth Decay???Read
Web of Deceit by Malcolm Ross.???
McCarthy said he also received a
phone call from Dr. Julius Israeli
of Newcastle protesting the
inclusion of the float in the parade.
Israeli, who lost half his family
in Auschwitz, has been conducting
a campaign against the book since
it appeared last April. He has
called for the dismissal of Ross and
has asked New Brunswick
Attorney General Rodman Logan
to apply the criminal code against
the book.
not. of course not."
Vance, who appeared on the
ABC-TV ???Issues and Answers"
program Sunday said in reply to a
question that Israel must accept
the principle of withdrawal from
the West Bank as a pre-condition
for continued negotiations. ???I have
always believed that the basic
principle underlying the peace
negotiations is (UN) Resolution
242... which very clearly talks
about withdrawal from occupied
territories,??? he said. Vance said the
foreign ministers' meeting in
England did not narrow the
fundamental differences between
Israel and Egypt.
Dayan told the Knesset that the
Egyptians had presented their
most rigid stance at the Leeds
Castle talks. He said they opposed
any Israeli troop presence on the
West Bank after a peace treaty is
signed and insisted that any border
changes would be negligible.
However, on the positive side,
Dayan noted that in their formal
presentation the Egyptians no
longer demanded a Palestinian
working with grants and doing
research in high blood pressure.
He also helps give care to
underprivileged and enlists other
doctors to do the same.
Dr. Shulman has resisted
becoming an egotist.
???The whole thing of becoming a
doctor and author is demystified
quickly. It???s no ego trip to me
although society tends to put
doctors on pedestals at times," he
said.
Dr. Shulman finds the ???beeper"
especially good for a doctor's ego.
???Beepers are fascinating.
Beepers mean power to many," he
said pulling his own beeper out. ???I

He listed the following points of
contact ???in conception??? between
himself and Foreign Minister
Kaamel: (
An end to Israeli military rule on
the West Bank; some form of
Palestinian local authority there
and in the Gaza Strip; a five-year
interim period; discussion of the
long-term disposition of those
territories after the five years;
joint negotiations on the refugee
problem; free Jewish-Arab
intercourse on the West Bank and
in Israel after peace is established;
special status of the holy places in
Jerusalem; no re-division of
Jerusalem; and the need to prevent
terrorism.
???But the gap is immeasurably
wider than the common ground,"
Dayan said. He said the differences
focussed on three basic issues; the
permanent sovereign status of the
West Bank which the Egyptians
regard as Arab territory and Begin
regards as ???liberated??? Jewish land;
security arrangements; and the
timetable and mechanism for
decision-making on the West
Bank.
Dayan said the security
measures Egypt proposed were
mutual demilitarization, limited
force* zones, UN supervision.
American-manned advance
warning devices, third party
supervision, free access of all
shipping td international
waterways, including the Suez
Canal and full peace and
normalization of relations, which
Egypt sees as the best security
guarantee of all.
But, Dayan said, the Egyptians
would not countenance any Israeli
troops or settlements across the
border. He said their ???readiness for
minor border changes" as Kaamel
used to have mine Connected

one time my students pulled a joke
on me. I guess I had given them a
hard time that day. I was in this
conference with all these doctors
discussing a serious disease The
next thing you know my beeper
went off and all you could hear was
the sound of a toilet flushing Can
you imagine how embarrassing
that can be? Everyone looked at
my pocket, where the sound was
coming from.
???Some of my students kid me
and say that I carry the beeper
everywhere, even in the shower.
Well one time it did fall in the
toilet. It sounded as if the operator
was drowning," he reminisced.
Juggling between being a doctor
and aa author. Dr. Shulman Finds
his life full of everything
???My whole thrust in life is
variety. I like new and different
things. Something wild is
happening all the time. I speak to
all kinds of groups about all kinds
of things. One minute I???m talking
about care for the underserved and
the next minute I???m talking about
my grandmother. One day a lady
called me from the New York
News and the was doing a story on
???Do you love your doctor?" Who
knows why she called me?" be said
with a shrug ???I tell you, anything
can happen."
explained it, meant only such
changes that would assure that
villages were not divided by a
border line. Dayan said ???Israel has
not agreed to any territorial
compromise. We asked them (the
Egyptians) if they would accept the
Alton plan and they said, no, of
course not.??? The plan, proposed
after the 1967 war by former
Foreign Minister Yigal Allon,
never ofFicially adopted by Israel,
called for partition of the West
Bank with Israel maintaining a
security border on the Jordan
River.
Allon was the first spokesman
for the Labor opposition at
Monday's debate. He dwelt at
length on the Middle East formula
drafted earlier this month by
Chancellor Bruno Kreisky of
Austria and former West German
Chancellor Willy Brandt and
adopted by the Labor Party
Sunday.
Allon called it ???the best
international interpretation of
Resolution 242 ever" and told
Likud, ???don???t let your jealousy
blind you.???
