Showery dowry?
Once strictly practical, showers
r today can be fun-filled parties
One of a future bride’s most
pleasant moments comes with the
showers often given for her by
close friends.
Originally a shower was given to
replace the dowry denied a bride,
who married against her father’s
wishes.
Today’s showers actually take
much the same purpose—to equip
the couple’s new home—but while
the ancient showers were strictly
practical, today’s are fun-filled
parties.
Midmorning, afternoon or
evening, any time is appropriate
for a shower. Decorations and
refreshments may be as simple or
as elaborate as the hostess wishes.
Game room: cards, score pads,
records, board games, books, and
bar accessories.
Often the bridesmaids may wish
to entertain the bride at a
luncheon—not a shower—at a
home or a favorite restaurant.
Many brides also give a
luncheon or tea for their
bridesmaids. It may serve to
introduce out-of-town brides,
maids to other friends, to show
wedding gifts to her attendants or
give the bridesmaids an
opportunity to try on their dresses.
It is a perfect time for the bride to
present her token gifts to her
attendants.
The bachelor’s party for the
bridegroom-to-be is not as
conventional as it was a number of
years ago, but if held, it is the time
when he presents his gifts to his
attendants.

Invitations may be formal or may
be original creations using a
special theme.
Kitchen showers, miscellaneous
showers and personal showers are
all extremely popular.
Anyone may give a shower in
honor of the bride except her
mother, sister and members of her
fiance’s immediate family. If a
number of showers are to be given,
the guest list should not be
comprised of the same friends so
that they are not obligated to give a
number of gifts.
A shower often will be planned
as a surprise party so the hostess
must be certain to inform the
mother of the bride, the maid of
honor or close friends who might
be consulted as to the bride’s
preferences in colors, patterns or
other choices.
What do you bring? The list is
endless:
Lingerie: gowns, robes, slips,
stockings, lingerie cases,
handkerchiefs, slippers, and other
personal apparel. Often included
are closet accessories.
Linen: table cloths, napkins,
place mats, sheets, pillowcases,
bedspreads, bath towels, guest
towels.
Kitchen: small kitchen
accessories, pottery, gadgets,
aprons, favorite recipes, spice jars,
mixing bowls, cutting boards,
gourmet pantry items, unusual
decorative items.
