Temple slates institute Feb. 9-10
“How Does A Jew Meet God?
will be‘the theme of the Jacob M.
Rothschild Institute, to be held at
the Temple, Feb. 9 and 10 with Dr.
David R. Blumenthal of Emory
University as leader.
The institute will deal with
Jewish spirituality. An expert on
Medievel Judiasm, Dr. Blumen
thal will delve into Hassidic
mysticism explaining “the spark"
that binds man to God.
Among the questions to be
discussed will be “Can I be Jewish
if I identify culturally but not
religiously?" and “What kind of
sacred space do I need to pray to
God?"
The Institute, established in
memory of the late Rabbi Jacob
M. Rothschild, who died in
December 1973, is held yearly and
explores issues facing members of
the Temple and other Jews.
It will begin with services Friday
at 8:IS p.'m. A musical program
written for last year’s Institute by
Wallace Zimmerman, music
director, will be played. Following
services. Dr. Blumenthal will
discuss “Understanding the
religiousness of Judiasm." _
Following a discussion on
Psalms, a congregational luncheon
and Saturday services, Dr.
Blumenthal and the three rabbis of
the Temple will take part in a panel
on the proper setting for worship.
Dr. Blumenthal, a rabbi and
professor of religion, occupies the
Jay and Leslie Cohen Chair of
Judaic Studies at Emory
University. He is the author of
several books and papers on
philosophy, mysticism and
Hassidism. Dr. Blumenthal is also
co-ordinator of “Witness to the
Holocaust: An Oral History
Project,” where liberators of
concentration camps are being
interviewed.
Mrs. Henry Caplan and Mrs.
Arnold Goldberg are co-chair
persons of the Institute.

Hebrew was the recent lesson of
the Ulpan Spoken Hebrew
Language Group sponsored by the
Epstein-Schechter School PTA
and encouraged by the Atlanta
Bureau of Jewish Education.

views Israel slides
Congregation Etz Chaim
Sisterhood will meet Monday,
Feb. 5, at the home of Jane
Goodman in Marietta.
Dr. Leon Spotts, director of
Jewish education, will present a
tour of Israel through various
slides he has taken on his many
trips to Israel.

Jewish Home has
Sunday services
The first Sunday morning
service at the Jewish Home will
take place at 9:30 a.m., Sunday,
Feb. 4, in the chapel.
This service is in addition to the
Friday night and Saturday
morning services.

Shabhat Shirah
Temple Sinai will hold services
in honor of Shabbat Shirah at 8:15
p.m. Friday. Feb. 9. The Temple
Sinai Choir will give a special
musical presentation under the
direction of Mrs. Louise Seidel.
Participating in the all volunteer
choir are members of Temple
Sinai, including Carol Babush,
Judy David, Lillian Reps, Barbara
Sharony, Barbara Olds, Dr.
Warren Jacobs, Art Richek. and
Alan Gould.
Louise Seidel, director, is a
soprano with the Atlanta
Symphony, where sheis a featured
soloist in the Chamber Chorus.
Cantor Sid Gottler will also be
on the program and will perform
with Mrs. Seidel.
Mizrachi Women plan
“AMW Shabbat”
American Mizrachi Women will
celebrate “AMW Shabbat” on
Saturday, Feb. 10, at Congrega
tion Shearith Israel and Ahavath
Achim Synagogue, and on
Saturday, Feb. 17, at Congrega
tion Beth Jacob.
Participating in this sabbath
salute will be the Atlanta Chapter
of American Mizrachi Women,
Mrs. Manuel Levine, president;
and Gesher Tzion Chapter, Mrs.
Herbert Cohen, president.
Synagogues throughout the
United States will observe the
“AMW Shabbat” which will help
launch a national membership
drive in support of child care,
social services and educational
projects maintained by AMW in
Israel.

After 13 years
Past president Saul
takes Hadassah gavel
The gavel of the president of th^
Atlanta Chapter of Hadassah has
been handed over from Roz Levey
to Virginia Saul. Mrs. Levey and
her .family are leaving Atlanta to
make their home in Beaumont,
Tex., where Leonard Levey has
taken a new position.
Mrs. Saul, stepping into the
presidency is very involved in
community work in the Atlanta
area and in the southeastern
region. She served as president of
the Tel Chai Group of Hadassah in
1956 and as president of the
Atlanta Chapter from I964-I966
In 1976, Mrs. Saul was a vice
president of the southeastern
region of Hadassah and currently
serves as recording secretary of the
southeastern region.
Mrs. Saul has served with the
Atlanta Jewish Federation as
chairman of the' Pace Setters,
Sentinel, Advance, and special
categories.^ She has occupied
positions on the boards of the
Ahavath Achim Sisterhood,
Brandeis Women’s Committee,
Atlanta Jewish Community
Center, and the Bureau of Jewish
Education In I967 she sat on the
Committee on the Status of
Women.
Mrs. Saul, a native of Atlanta, is
a graduate of the University of
Georgia. She is the wife of Milton
Saul and has three children.
