Leaders against women rabbis
NEW YORK (JTA)—Leaden of three national groups
representing Orthodox synagogues, rabbis and women, jointly
expressed regret at the recommendation last week by a commission
of the Rabbinical Assembly that “women be ordained as rabbis,”
as “another radical break with the mainstream of historical
Judaism. It is a specious gimmick rather than a genuine effort to
bring women into the rabbinate, and it is a tacit admission that
Conservativism is, in fact, a declining movement."
This statement was issued by Julius Berman, president of the
Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America (UOJCA),
Rabbi Bernard Rosensweig, president of the Rabbinical Council of
America, and Deborah Turk, president of the Women’s Branch of
the UOJCA.
Old City blast kills Arab
JERUSALEM (JTA)—A powerful explosion in the Old City
Sunday killed one Arab and severely injured two others. Police
said the blast, which occured at 6:45 p.m. local time only a few
hundred feet from the Western Wall, was caused by the premature
detonation of a bomb being assembled by terrorists. A massive
round-up of suspects was conducted in the vicinity but most were
released after questioning. Police said the house where the bomb
exploded was in ruins.
Anti-Nazi demonstrators arrested
WASHINGTON (JTA)—A demonstration in front of the
White House to focus attention on Nazi war criminals residing in
this country ended 20 minutes after it began when park police
arrested seven of the 20 demonstrators who had handcuffed
themselves to a White House fence. Among those
arrested was Dr. Charles H. Kremer, the 81-year-old dentist from
New York City who for the past 38 years has been seeking to bring
to justice the former Romanian Iron Guard leader, Bishop
Valerian Trifa who is living in Grass Lake, Mich.
Poland to receive Israeli rabbi
JERUSALEM (ZINS)—The Polish government has given its
consent to receive a rabbi from the State of Israel, who will be the
spiritual leader of the Jewish communities that have remained in
Poland, according to an announcement by the Chief Rabbi,
Shlomo Goren. Rabbi Goren announced that a Polish-speaking
rabbi has already been elected, who is prepared to take over the
conduct of the rabbinate in Poland.
Levesque courts Quebec Jews
MONTREAL (JTA)—Prime Minister Rene Levesque, leader
of the separatist Parti Quebecois, urged the Jews of the Province to
Quebec to reconcile themselves to and integrate with the
permanent French cultural and linguistic majority in Quebec. He
also gave his “solemn assurances" that his government will not
tolerate any form of “racism or discrimination." Levesque said that
if Quebec becomes sovereign, its government will recognize Israel
and favor a solution for the Palestinian Arabs in an “entity" of their
own.
Church wants policy review
PALM BEACH, FLA. (JT^)—Frank Church (D. Idaho),
chairman of the Senate Foreign Rerations Committee, called for “a
fundamental review of U.S. policy with the government of Saudi
Arabia," including the advisability of proceeding with the F-15 sale
to that country. In remarks prepared for delivery to the national
executive of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B'rith meeting
here, Church said: “I suggest that now is precisely the time to
inform the Saudis that an ‘inner relationship' cannot be a one-way
street."
“The United States consistently misjudged the situation in
Iran," he said. “I fear that we are equally out of touch with the
realities in Saudi Arabia and pinning our policy to false
assumptions."

Is home for handicapped needed?
Editor:
Several Atlanta Jewish parents
of handicapped children are
seeking to establish a group home
for handicapped adults. This is one
very important step in aiding them
to live in moderate independence,
leading useful and happy lives.
Living and working together in
such a unit will build their feelings
of self worth, will give them the
opportunity to establish normal
relationships and develop social
abilities. These are the basic needs
and rights of every human being.
It is our goal that the group
home provide semi-independent
living for a fairly wide range of
abilities. We include those who
could handle some of the
responsibilities of helping to
maintain the home, those who
would require a sheltered
workshop, and those who could
work outside the home during the
day.
This home would need
supervising house parents and
social services from the
community.
We are in the process of
surveying:
1. The extent of need in the
community,
2. The possible sources of local
sponsorship and continuing
support and guidance,
3. The availability of govern
ment aid in establishing the home.
We are asking your help in
contacting your readers so those
who have a handicapped child or
adult who needs this service now or
may need it in the future, and who
are interested in our project, may
call Susan K. Barnard, 237-0444,
and we will send a letter explaining
our plant and a survey sheet.
It is in the Jewish tradition to
take care of our own and to come
to the aid of the less fortunate. The
support of the Jewish community
will insure that our children will
continue to live in a Jewish
environment.

Keep Shcharansky letters coming
Editor:
A most heartfelt “yasher koach”
for devoting a prominent full page
to marking the second birthday of
Anatoly Sharansky has spent in a
Soviet prison. Letters to him are,
as you state, crucial, since the
prison authorities seek to shut off
almost all communications to him
and have denied his ill, aged
parents their half-yearly visit with
him.
There are slight modifications
on the addresses you listed which
should enhance letters reaching
their destination: Anatoly is at:
UCHR 5110/1 Uf, Moscow,
RSFSR, USSr (the box number
for the Chistipol Frison, which is
several hundred miles from
Moscow).
His mother Ida Milgrom is at:
Cooperativnaya 8/4, Gorod Istra.
Moskovskaya Oblast, RSFSR,
USSR.
