Young ambassadors
tour the Southeast
by Faith Powell
This week Israel has sent a very
special group of ambassadors to
America. They have never served
in the army, they are not
government officials, experts in
foreign affairs or attaches to the
prime minister. In fact, they have
never voted in a public election.
The diplomats have not even
graduated from high school yet.
These young men and women were
selected from 700 Israeli student
applicants to participate in a
youth-to-youth goodwill tour.
Six of the Israeli high school
delegation will spend two months
in the southeast speaking,
discussing, teaching, and learning
and making new friends in the
United States. Two of the young
Israelis will be in the Atlanta area
for two weeks before going on to
visit other Georgia cities.
After landing in New York City,
most of the group got their first
taste of a land they had heard and
read so much about.
Ralphy Strugo, a volleyball
enthusiast, said, “I looked forward
to seeing the tall buildings, the
skyscrapers. My father told me all
about them.”
“New York was so cold,” Dalit
Marmour from Kfar Bialik
remarked. “Yes, it was freezing,”
added Rachella Sandbank, “1
don’t remember ever having to
wear so many sweaters and coats.”
Rachella admitted that many of
the students who participated in
the program before told them
about American youth. “They all
said how easy it was to make the
students laugh.” But the group
agreed it was better for each to find
out for themselves about their
counterparts here in America.
In order to be chosen for this
program each student had many
interviews and were asked many
questions by education officials
back in Israel. Hillel Abt said,
“The teachers wanted to make sure
we could communicate in English
and that we had a good
understanding of our own
country.” Hillel is the head of the
student council of his high school.
Grades, attitude, personality
and leadership ability were all
important factors in being picked
to travel such a long way to meet
with American youth.

It is difficult, they all agreed, for
young people to relate to the
“adult” politics. Anti-Israeli
propaganda can prove very
confusing. Their goal, therefore, is
to help students here to understand
about Israel—the country and
Israel—the people. It is not their
wish to give opinions but rather
their impressions of their own
lives.
The young ambassadors will
visit schools, in different
communities armed with maps,
posters, slides, and even films.
They will stay with local Jewish
families to help them discover
more about our way of life and to
enable Israeli highschoolers to
participate in “real American
activities.”
Ronen Ben-Dov of Tel Aviv
said, “You can’t learn much from
newspapers about the people, it is
better to be able to talk...to make
friends.”
“I found out that some people
didn’t even know what, how do
you say?, continent, Israel is on,"
said Ranit Zexer. Ranit lives on a
kibbutz in the Jordan Valley.
The ultimate goal of the
program, sponsored by the Israeli
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
the Ministry of Education, is to
"establish a dialogue and foster a
better understanding between the
two societies.”

young Israelis speak should
