Goldberg, Blumenthal join AJCC staff
Patty Goldberg
Patiy Wise Goldberg has been
named to the full-time AJCC staff
as membership director, and
Debbie Blumenthal has been
appointed children's and youth
worker.
Ms. Goldberg graduated from
Boston University where she
majored in elementary education.
She received her masters degree
from Emory University in
elementary education with a minor
in special education.
A native of Atlanta, Ms.
Goldberg taught six years in the
public schools, operated her own
fund raising business, and worked
in a regional sales office before
coming to work at the Center.
Some of her responsibilities will
include membership intake, public
relations, orientation, processing
membership adjustments, and
membership recruitment.
Ms. Blumenthal is a native of
Savannah and received her
bachelor of arts degree in Judaic
Studies from Boston University.
She is currently enrolled in the
Block education program at
Yeshiva University Wurzweiler
School of social work where she is
pursuing her masters degree in
Debbie Blumenthal
social work. As childrens and
youth worker, Ms. Blumenthal’s
assignment includes supervision of
the Hebrew Academy and Temple
Sinai extension programs, direct
leadership of M'Uchadim Senior
Judaea, leadership of the Havanah
Youth Group, and advisor to
Thursday Singles.

AJC’s Silverman kicks off course
Dr. Sidney Clearfield,
international director of the B’nai
B’rith Youth Organization of
Washington, D C., will be the
guest speaker at a brunch to be
held at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb.
25, at the Standard Club.
Sponsors are the District Five
B’nai B’rith Youth Organization
board and the Atlanta BBYO
board. Milton Bach is chairperson
of the Atlanta BBYO board and
Celia Adler is vice chairperson as
well as chairperson of the host
committee for the brunch.
The district board, chaired by
Lillian Nuger of Baltimore, will
meet in Atlanta Feb. 24 and 25
Circuit Rabbi visits
Temple Emanu-EI
Who would believe that in this
day and time there is a rabbi who
travels 2,000 miles a week to
conduct services. Would you
believe that there is a rabbi who
drives an extra 200 miles in one day
to teach one Hebrew class? There is
such a rabbi, and Temple Emanu-
EI will have Rabbi Reuben M.
Kesner as a guest rabbi for Friday
evening services, Feb. 23, at 8 p.m.,
at Decatur Federal Savings and
Loan in Dunwoody Village.
Rabbi Kesner is one of
Judaism's foremost circuit riding
rabbis. He travels throughout five
North and South Carolina
communities, conducting services,
preparing confirmation, bar and
bat mitzva candidates, and
performing Jewish traditions.
Some twenty years ago Rabbi
Kesner gave up his job in Chicago
to become one of the four
remaining circuit rabbis in the
United States.
The rabbi says, “When I first
came down here and saw the
swamps and cornfields, I said to
myself, no, I can’t do it. I can’t live
without concerts, museums and art
galleries. Today I could not leave. I
have a challenge here that’s greater
than in all of Jewish education.”

The district board is the policy
making group for BBYO in the six
state area of District Five. Kent
Schiner of Baltimore, president of
District Five B’nai B’rith and
Arnold Ellison of Atlanta,
executive vice president of District
Five, will represent the men and
Joan Gordon of Charlotte and
Dolly Staff of Birmingham,
chairpersons of the mid-Atlantic
and Southeastern Regions of B'nai
B’rith Women, will represent the
women. Ruth Wallace represents
the South Coastal (Florida)
Region of B’nai B’rith Women.
Dr. Clearfield succeeded Dr.
Max Baer as international director
of BBYO, having served as
Dr. Fred Crawford
to address Beth Shalom
Congregation Beth Shalom will
have a program, “Witness to the
Holocaust,” with guest speaker
Dr. Fred Crawford, co-director of
the Center for Research in Social
Change at Emory, at 10:30 a.m.,
Sunday, Feb. 18, at Briarlake
Elementary.
Dr. Crawford has studied the
Holocaust through the eyes of
those people involved in the
liberation process of the POW,
labor and death camps, “military
personnel, press, relief agency
workers, etc.”
Social Security subject
at Workmen’s Circle
The next meeting of the
Workmen’s Circle will be held at 3
p.m., Sunday, Feb. 25, at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bauman,
1705 Merton Rd.
Richard Telling, director of
external affairs for the Atlanta
region of the Social Security
administration, will talk about
“Aspects of Social Security
Interesting to those 60—Plus or
Minus.”

Dr. Clearfield was the Assistant
dean of the school of social work of
the commonwealth University of
Virginia in Richmond prior to
joining B’nai B’rith.
Special invitations to the brunch
have been extended to B'nai B’rith
leaders of Atlanta and to the
boards of the Jewish Federation
and the Jewish Community
Center, The .presidents and
advisors of the Atlanta BBYO
chapters will also participate in the
program.

Ahavath Achim to hear
Rabbi Seymour Siegel
Rabbi Seymour Siegel will
speak at the Ahavath Achim Adult
Education Forum at 8:15 p.m.,
Monday, Feb. 26. His topic will
deal with the challenges of Jewish
law today.
Dr. Siegel is professor of
theology and rabbinic throught at
the Jewish Theological Seminary
and serves as chairman of the
committee on Jewish law and
standards of the Rabbinical
Assembly. He is on the editorial
board of Conservative Judiasm,
Shma, and Worldview.
AJCC offers
Lamaze childbirth course
The Atlanta Jewish Community
adult department is offering a
special six week course in Lamaze
childbirth beginning at 7:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, March 13.
Couples registering for the
course should have a delivery date
between April 18 and May 29. This
course taught by Peri Weinstein,
RPT, Lamaze childbirth educator,
covers anatomy, the physiology of
labor and delivery, relaxation and
body building exercises, and
breathing techniques.

Ira Silverman, the American
Jewish Committee’s director of
special programming and editor of
“Petro Impact," will kick offafour
session course entitled “The
Impact of The Arab," on Tuesday,
Feb. 20, at 8 p.m., at the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center. Mr.
Silverman's address will be on
“Arab Influence in America." The
course is cosponsored by the Arab
Influence Committee of AJCs
Atlanta chapter and the Brandeis
University National Women’s
Committee, Atlanta Chapter.
Ira Silverman is director of
special programs of the American
Jewish Committee, concentrating
on dealing with aspects of Arab
influence in the United States. He
has also served as Washington
correspondent for the “Jerusalem
Post," and for the Tel Aviv daily
newspaper “Yediot Achronot."
“Petro Impact," a quarterly
publication of the American
Jewish Committee, reports on
growing Arab involvement in
American Affairs.
