On Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m.,
the Jewish community of Atlanta
will welcome the Moscow
Philharmonic Orchestra to the city
by way of a demonstration to be
held before their scheduled
performance at the Fox Theater.
Jewish organizations and
synagogues are being called upon
to urge their members to
participate in the demonstration
which will interpret to the more
than 2,000 ticket holders and the
90 members of the orchestra and
O
its large entourage the status of the
Soviet Jewish people. Soviet Jews
are denied the right: to emigrate
freely; to practice or transmit their
religion; to study their Hebrew
culture and language. Applica
tions to emigrate to Israel are often
rewarded with loss of employ
ment, phones removed, mail
searched and constant KGB
surveillance. Soviet Jews’ cries of
anguish are inconsistent with the
beauty of the upcoming
performance.
Eugene Gold, chairman of the
National Conference on Soviet
Jewry, said recently, “Now, more
than ever, Soviet Jews are
depending upon support in the
West, especially in the U.S. We
cannot diminish our concern one
iota, especially if the public
perceives the easing of emigration
patterns as a solution to Soviet
Jewry issues.”
Members of the Jewish
community are urged to join the
protest and help distribute leaflets
prepared by Federation’s Soviet
Jewry Committee.
Demonstrators will gather
Sunday at 2 p.m. on the Ponce de
Leon side of the Fox Theater and
are invited to bring appropriate
posters.
