Gideon Patt inaugurating
79 Israel Bond Campaign
Gideon Pan, Minister of
Commerce, Industry and Tourism
and former Minister of
Construction and Environment of
the State of Israel will be in Atlanta
on Thursday, May 3, to inaugurate
the 1979 Atlanta Israel Bond
Campaign.
Minister Patt will be the guest of
Amy and Marvin Singer, chairmen
of the Corps of Patron Hosts for
the Atlanta Israel Dinner of State
to be held on June 14. The Singer
reception is in preparation for the
annual Spring event and will
welcome members of the Patron
Host Committee.
In his new post in the Cabinet,
Minister Patt heads an expanded
department which is responsible
for the creation of new industrial
enterprises, the expansion of trade.
Louis Kahn Home
for Elderly opens
by Richard Eisler
A new “family” began moving
into the neighborhood last week.
Their redbrick house secluded in
its wooded, hilltop lot is similar to
many other Atlanta residences.
Once inside, however, the
conspicuous exit signs above the
staircases and handrails in the
baths indicated the special nature
of this unique family.
Ten to 12 adults will eventually
live here, the minimum age limit
fixed at 60.
They are residents of the Louis
Kahn Group Home for the
Elderly, a pilot project and
cooperative effort begun three
years ago by the Atlanta Section of
the National Council of Jewish
Women and the Jewish Family
and Children's Bureau. Similar to
prototypes in San Francisco,
Philadelphia, Baltimore, and
Chicago, it will provide an
alternative for Jewish elderly who
cannot function in the
unsupervised lifestyle of
apartment housing but who do not
require nursing home care.
According to the Bureau’s
Sheldon Pinsker, relatively
independent individuals who
require a moderate level of
supervision have no other facility
in Atlanta suited for their needs.
“It fills the gap between the Jewish
Home and an older couple or
individual living alone.” More
accomodations for the elderly
similar to the Louis Kahn home
are needed in the Atlanta area and
throughout Georgia and the
nation. Roz Cohen, incoming
president of the NCJW, says that

Applicants are screened by a
committee composed of Pinsker,
Bureau staffers Rona Schpeiser
and Merna Alpert, and Dr.
Bernard Palay, chairman of the
Atlanta Jewish Federation’s
committee on aging. Since no
medical services are provided,
candidates' medical records are
carefully considered along with
their psychological and social
functioning. Individuals and
couples accepted into the program
are assigned a private room and
private or adjoining bath at a cost
of from $400 to $500 a month
which includes meals, housekeep

community facilities, and a full

The project is named in honor of

Amy Singer, chairman of the
Reinvestment Committee of
Atlanta Israel Bonds, has
announced there will be an Israel
Bond Booth at the May 6 Passport
to Israel to be held at the AJCC.
Mrs. Singer said that State of
Israel Savings Bonds purchased in
1967 and still being held will
mature in 1979.
The Israeli Knesset has enacted
special legislation to benefit
bondholders to allow immediate
reinvestment even though the
present Bond may not mature until
later this year, provided the next
higher denomination is purchased.
Everyone wishing to. reinvest in
Israel can bring their 1967 Israel
Savings Bond to the Israel bonds
booth at Passport to Israel where
the Bond Committee and staff will
help them in processing the
reinvestment.
