cc Peace is worth a thousand times more... than all the guns and shells that roar... Tali Gat, age 10, Holon ....and it’s going to cost more. 99 A first step has been taken, ... but a long slow climb remains upward to the heights of peace. The cost of that first step will be enormous for our people. Billions of dollars will be needed in Israel for: Redeployment & Reconstruction Total cost of withdrawal from the Sinai- redeployment of defense forces to the Negev, construction of new support systems, replacement of air bases and port facilities, a new airborne warning system - could run as high as $10 billion over the next three years. Loss of Oil With the Sinai oilfields and the $100 million invested in them left behind, an estimated $160 million a year will have to be spent on developing alternate sources. Outside oil purchase will strain Israel’s already unfavorable balance of payments. Resettlement Transfer and resettlement of residents in Yamit and surrounding Rafiah region villages will cost at least another $300 million. Increased Inflation Massive construction spending will create severe inflationary pressures - in a land where the rate of inflation neared 50 percent last year. And trimming the national budget to fight inflation will result in cutbacks in social services. Meeting these lightened needs and strengthening the qualify of life for Israel’s people as they move toward a true peace, is our central, overriding responsibility. It is the greatest challenge and opportunity we have faced. If you have not already made your 1979 contribution to the Atlanta Jewish Federation Campaign do so today! Jack I.
