Organizations Rabbi Brickner visits Sinai Religious services at Temple Sinai at 8:15 p.m., on Friday, July 13, will include a visit by Rabbi Balfour Brickner of New York to introduce a series of innovative radio programs to begin in the Atlanta area and the presentation of a Torah to Temple Emanu-EI. “Adventures in Judaism” a 52- part radio series, will begin in Atlanta on Sunday, July 15, on WGKA-1190 AM. The programs, which will run on Sunday mornings between 8:30 and 9:00, are being presented under the auspices of Temple Sinai through a grant from Ellman's. The taped programs were developed by Rabbi Brickner for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Rabbi Brickner is a member of the steering committee of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations. He has hosted a weekly national radio program, “Adventures in Judaism,” which won numerous awards for religious broadcasting. The broadcasts feature Molly Picon, Albert Decker, and the late Zero Mostel. Some programs are “My Brother's Keeper,” “God, Man, and the Weather,” and “Chemical Religion." Mrs. Rosanne Diamond is coordinating the programs for Temple Sinai. The Torah presentation to Atlanta's newest Reform Rabbi Brickner congregation has special significance to Temple Sinai members. Rabbi Richard Lehrman reminisced that part of Temple Sinai's history lies in the fact that its first Torah was presented by the Temple on Peachtree Street in April 1968. He said, “To preserve this tradition and sense of community, we are presenting a first Torah to Temple Emanu-EI, which shall serve as a link between God and man, and as a link between the two congregations.” Rabbi Donald Tam and congregational president, Mark Young, will accept the Torah on behalf of Temple Emanu-EI The community is invited to attend. Zaban Branch previews youth activities Special to ike Southern Imoeike A look into the very near future at the new Zaban Branch of the Atlanta Jewish Community Center: It is now 4:20. You have just 10 minutes to gel to your clubs, classes or groups," announces the voice over the loudspeaker. The children, ranging in age from five to 14, start putting away their games, poo! cues, pingpong paddles, basketballs and racquets. It is lime to leave the supervised gameroom or the gym and their activities are about to begin. The sound of moving feel and exciting conversation is reminiscent of high school days between classes. But there the similarity ends, for these youngsters need no second reminder. They have chosen to take one or more of the over 200 activities offered at the Zaban Branch building of the AJCC: cooking, fishing, painting, nature science, archery, gym, tennis, clay, modern dance, basket making, weaving, exercise, CB radio, sculpture, canoeing, sports, magic, book clubs, printing, copper enameling, traditional Jewish cooking, ballet, archaeology, and making models are just a few of the offerings. Most of these young people have come to the Center right from schools, some riding bicycles, others brought by car-pooling parents. Early arrivals will go immediately to the gameroom, where, under supervision, they can pass the time having fun while waiting for their activity to start. In today's society, mobility of families often precludes closeness. The purpose of the AJCC is to resurrect this sense of intimacy through groups and clubs, offering a home away from home and the extended family environment formally known as the “neighborhood." Many new children are joining the Center this year, awaiting the fun filled moments in organized activity groups. The motives for registration of children vary. Some parents want their child to learn a skill; others want their child to “have a place to go.” Many youngsters register to develop friendships. Perhaps the most basic motive for joining groups is to reap the satisfaction and enjoyment that comes from just having fun. The constructive use of leisure time is certainly a healthy reason for encouraging children to participate in AJCC group activities. One of the greatest values a child can derive from participating in a club is self-understanding In a club, the child learns what kind of behavior is acceptable He begins to sense how others view him, based on how they react to him. Groups and clubs will meet weekdays after school at the Zaban Branch.
