Sylvia Hassenfeld of
Providence, H I., immediate
past president of the United
Jewish Appeal’s national
women's division, has been
appointed a national vice
chairman of the UJA by Irwin
S. Field, national chairman.
Mrs. Hassenfeld has served
as chairman of the UJA
national women's division and
is a member of the board of
governors of the Jewish Agency
and the board of directors of
the United Jewish Appeal. She
is also a member of the
executive committees of the
United Israel Appeal, the
American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee, and
the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee.
As chairman of the Women's
Division, Mrs. Hassenfeld led
the first Women’s Division
mission to Auschwitz in 1974,
and in 1977 was the Division's
first representative to visit
South America.

Mrs. Sam Malickson of Silver
Spring. Great-grandmothers are
Mrs. Sadye Scheer of Atlanta and
Mrs. Libby Aronson of West Palm
Beach.
Craig Ellis Aronoff and Allen
Michael Soden, both of Atlanta,
have been selected lor inclusion in
the 1979 edition of Outstanding
Young Men of America. Selection
to this annual awards publication
is based upon accomplishments in
areas such as community service,
academic achievement, and civic
and political participation.

Mrs. Sylvia Becker of Atlanta
and Cantor Isaac Goodfriend of
Ahavath Achim Synagogue will
participate with the President’s
Commission on the Holocaust on
its mission to Poland, Russia,
Denmark, and Israel Elie Wiesel,
chairman of the commission, will
head the group which departs on
July 29

Evelyn Elkon left Atlanta 33
years ago in pursuit of the Zionist
dream. Today, she is Chava
Banai and lives on Kibbutz
Maayan Baruch in northern Israel.
She will be visiting Atlanta July 29

William A. Gralnkk, southeast
regional director of the American
Jewish Committee, has been
elected to the 1979-80 Leadership
Atlanta class, a non-profit
educational foundation. He was
one of 70 individuals chosen from
several hundred applicants to
participate in the nine month
program which is designed to train
Atlanta's leaders.
The Bar Mitzva of Jay Philip
Weiner of Savannah will take
place at 8:30 a m., Saturday, Aug
4, at B’nai B'rith Jacob Synagogue
A congregational kiddush will
follow Jay is the son of Harriet
Weiner and Aron Weiner.

Menu Alpert, supervisor of
geriatric programming, at the
Jewish Family and Children's
Bureau, was a guest lecturer at
Georgia State University’s 1979
Summer Series on Aging. Mrs.
Alpert discussed “Changing
Family Relationships in Sickness
and Aging; Focus on Middle-Age
Children of Elderly Parents.” Staff
associates Lois Blonder, Gloria
Merlin, and Lillian Pike also
participated in this series which is
designed to link the academic
programs of GSU’s gerontology
center with the needs of Atlanta's
agencies and institutions providing
services to the elderly.

Seven-year-old Pauline Sokol of
Charleston was one of four ballet
r students selected to appear in a
premiere ballet of the New York
Repertory Company during the
Spoleto Festival. Pauline is the
daughter of Frieda and Joe Sokol.

Savannah attorneys Aaron L.
Buchsbaum and Alan S. Lowe
have formed a partnership for the
general practice of law
Buchsbaum is a graduate of
Tulane University and the Emory
University School of Law. Lowe
graduated from George Washing
ton University and the University
of Georgia School of Law
Mordechai Hod, 53, has
resigned as managing director of
El Al Airlines. His deputy, Rafi
Harley, has been appointed acting
managing director Hod, who has
held the post since November
1977, had tendered his resignation
on a number of earlier occasions
but it was not previously accepted.

Mitchell Esral, son of Abe and
Faye Esral of Atlanta has received
a bachelor of Talmudic law degree
from Ner Israel Rabbinical
College and a bachelor of science
degree from Johns Hopkins
University. He was a member of
the first graduating class of
Yeshiva High School. Mitchell is
the grandson of Shea and Nettye
Diamond of Atlanta.

Shimon Cohen of Cardiff,
Wales, has won the first Pierre
Gildesgame Annual Award for the
Jewish Youth leader of the Year.
Conceived by Gildesgame,
president of the International
Maccabiah Games Committee, the
award was devised to promote the
development of Jewish youth
leadership in the United Kingdom
Cohen will visit the United States
this summer for a six-week
work/study program at the Jewish
community center in Stamford,

Florence Weinstein of
Atlanta has been awarded
Harry Norman, Realtors'
Flying Lady Award, which is
presented monthly to the firm’s
most outstanding sales
associate. Mrs. Weinstein, the
first sales associate to be
inducted into the company’s
Three Million Dollar Round
Table this year, was also
honored as Agent of the Month
for the Buckhead office.

Dr. Barry Goldsmith has
entered into private practice in
Augusta with a group in obstetrics
and gynecology Barry and his
wife, Mimi, have two children. Jay
and Melanie He is the son of June
and Jerry Goldsmith of Atlanta

Nathan Burgen was awarded an
honorary degree of doctor of
business administration at the
recent 82nd commencement of
Piedmont College in Demorest,
Ga.
Burgen, whose parents
emigrated to the United States
from Poland in 1919, was born
in Eufaula. Ala , one of five
children Immediately after
graduating from high school in
1944, he enlisted in the army,
where he served in the
Philippines Following his
discharge, Burgen and his
brother Jake opened a store in
Cornelia, Ga., as their father
had previously done in
Montgomery From these
beginnings in the post-war era,
there has grown a network of 11
stores in Georgia and South
Carolina
Burgen's interest in the
community has also grow n w i. h
his success as a merchant
Burgen
Along with other businessmen,
he was responsible for
encouraging the Riegel Textile
Corp. to locate a major mill in
the Cornelia area through their
contributions for the purchase
of property which they
presented to the mill. In
addition, his purchase of a hotel
in Cornelia and development of
real estate for a shopping center
has helped spur the local
economy.
Burgen is a member of the
First National Bank of
Habersham County, the board
of trustees of Piedmont
College, and a member of its
exeuctive committee.
Burgen's honorary degree
was awarded in appreciation of
his “daily demonstration of the
mutual faith of business and
education working together
within the principles of free
enterprise..."
