1 H itrao:
day with President Carter's Cabinet shakeup
What may have been planned as a demonstration
of new strength and decisiveness
has certainly backfired
The suspense of the long days at
Camp David ended with some
feeling of encouragement The
robes!-like obviously rehearsed
hand gestures didn't detract too
much from the words we were
wailing to hear
T he President talked to us seriously about a “crisis
of confidence ~ and offered a program that just might
work
Bui if the television address tended to inspire
confidence, the sbennamgans thal followed were
“crisis* a!! the wav
Now thai the dust is settling after the Cabinet
rearrangement, speculation turns to the W hite House
sta'T
Regardless of political views. Atlanta's Jewish
community has taken considerable pride that two
from our ranks. Robert Lipshuu and Stuart
House advisers
Early in the recent Washington blow-up, reports
were that Etzenslat, the President’s domestic affairs
adviser, would emerge stronger than ever I'm glad of
that Somehow, Stu's thoughtful presence up there
gives me more confidence than I might oiherwise
have
Bob l.ipshut/' role as White House legal counsel is
less public, but he has been a loyal adviser to the
President Nonetheless, his name has been mentioned
among those on the way out The speculation must
have reached the top, because on Wednesday, new
White House Chief of Stall Hamilton Jordan issued a
denial that Lipshut/ would be leaving Washington.
Denials are funny things There is the true-blue
dental of a preposterous suggestion But there is also
the red-herring denial Which is Jordan’s’ 1 I hope it’s
no fish story
Both Eizenstat and l.ipshut/ have listened
frequently and thoughtfully to the questions and
concerns of the Jewish community Presumably they
have passed on these concerns to higher places We
like the feeling of having someone in Washington care
what we think, even when it isn't campaign time
Tisha B’Av, day of tragedy
by Dmnid Russ
Tisha B’Av. or the ninth dav of
the month of Av. is a dav of fasting
on the Jewish calendar It marks
the end of a three week mourning
period that began with the Fast of
7 ammu7 It is a day of tnfamv
prophesied by G-d 3.500 years ago.
and it has proven itself, time and
again, to be a dav of tragedy for
Jews
When the Jews were wandering
in the desert, spies were sent to
scout the land of the Canaanitcs
All bul two of the 12 spies
slandered the land bv reporting
that it was populated by giants and
impervious to attack Thai night
the Israelites cned out to G-d
about their woes G-d responded
by telling them. “7 ou wept without
reason, so 1 wit fix you tor a weeping
of generations *
The parents of that generation
died in the desert and their
children, who did not weep
without reason, eventually
possessed the land This was the
first of a long line of troubles to
occur on the ninth of Av that
would torment the Jews for
generations to come.
In 58b B.C.E (3338 on the
Jewish calendar), in the davs of
Ring T/tdkiyahu. the First Temple
was destroyed on the ninth of Av
During the time of Rabbi
5 ochenon Ben Zakkai in 7 0 A D
(38281. the Second Icmplc was
also destroyed on the ninth of Av
b\ Titus
Fittv-iwo years later, the Jewish
citv of Beiar was destroved, the
final blow to the conquests of the
rebellious Bar kochha revolt
Jewish blood, spilled bv the
Romans, flowed like water on the
ninth of Av Then in 1492 (5252).
King Ferdinand’s decree expelling
the Jews from Spam was
implemented. By the ninth of Av.
the remaining 300.000 Jewish souls
left Spain with nowhere to go
Since then, a number of
contemporary tragedies have
struck the Jews on the ninth of Av
continual)' reminding us of the
impact of the divine promise made
three and a half millenniums ago
1 isha B’Av is also called
Menachem Av. or the comfort of
Av Though the Jews hold their
breath when Tisha BA'
approaches, the sages tel! us that
this same dav will herald the
coming of the Messiah Thus T isha
B Av will also serve as the day o!
redemption of the Jews
So 1 isha B' Av holds, for us all. a
mixed hag of sorrow, and peace
1 et us all prav that this year. Tisha
B’Av will not portend tragedv. but
the hope lor an everlasting peace
