Have l got an
answer for you!
by Ira L. Tedoff, Ph.D
My friends say I’m crazy, but I
get the distinct impression that
many Jewish people I meet dislike
being Jewish, and that some of
them even appear to despise
themselves for being Jewish.
Could this be my imagination, or
do some Jews really despise
themselves for being Jewish?
I can’t say whether or not you
are imagining or misperceiving the
Jewish people you have come in
contact with. However, as is true of
all faiths, cultures, ethnic groups,
and particularly minorities, there
will always be individuals who
have low opinions or inadequate
feelings about themselves. Such
poor self-concepts, usually come
about as a result of negative
experiences within one’s family
and/or socio-cultural environ
ment.
Of course, we as Jews have been
without adequate emotional
support from others. It is often too
easy for some of us to believe the

in a psychologically distorted way,
believe ourselves deserving of such
harsh abusive treatment inflicted
on us by our enemies. This

Nazi concentration camps, where
our bretheren were so emotionally
and physically abused, that dignity
and self-respect disappeared for
many, resulting in an intense
dislike or hatred of one’s self (The
label “self-hating-Jew” has been
used by some to describe such an
individual).
In its extreme, such hatred has
resulted in identification with the
aggressor or persecutor, where not
only does the individual “agree”
that they are deserving of such
persecution, but in addition, join
their “captors” in persecution of
others like themselves. Such
behavior is a psychological defense
against the emotional pain
experienced by such persecution.
