individuals or were senior
bureaucrats, most into their
middle ages. Suddenly they were
“unemployables. ” Suicide and
family abandonment never so-
called Jewish problems became a
harsh reality.
Coupled with this economic
insecurity came the "quota” issue.
The fear that a drastic shift in
domestic American policy
favoring quotas is a major worry to
Jews who are already eight years
older than the average American.
The threat of massive displace
ment from jobs is a real one. In
addition, the strains of
intermarriage, divorce, and a very
low birth rate add to the need of
Jews to concentrate more on their
own problems than ever before.
The lingering fear of the
Holocaust, Israel's territorial
insecurity, the tremendous influx
of Arab presence in America,
coupled with the mercurial
American policy towards Israel,
create further anxieties for
American Jews. So Jews cried out
about the economy. They cried out
about American policy. They also
aggressively protected their flanks.
At the same time, Jews seemed to
be withdrawing from the many
causes that put them in close touch
with blacks, often withdrawing
with the feeling that they really
weren’t wanted anyway. They left
with a lingering bitterness. This
then is a capsule of black-Jewish
strain that would well explain
some of the Harris statistics.
This writer discussed black-
Jewish relations and these results
with a leading black clergyman. I
found little hope for traditional
Jewish outreach methods designed
for ameliorating inter-group
tensions. In sum, the average black
individual is so mired in social and
economic problems that the
thought of dialogue is ludicrous.
Theological exchange is light years
away from daily pressures of often
marginally trained ghetto pastors,
he said. The black middle class, the
natural components of a dialogue,
is so far removed from the black
masses that there is little value of
exchange, if that exchange is to be
translated into broader contact in
the community.
Lastly, the black “leader" is
politically locked into a rhetoric on
domestic issues. Like the Bakke
case, the dialogue is often but a
prelude to confrontation.
This leaves Jews (and blacks)
with a problem. The two groups
with the greatest interest in
America’s cities, the two minority
groups with the greatest political

ELIZABETH, N.J. (JTA)—
Rabbi Pinchas Teitz said here he

Boris Michaelowitz Gram was
appointed to replace Yaakov

clout, the two groups with the
great domestic and foreign
concerns, both suffering internal
divisions, appear to be like two
ships passing in the night. The
question is will it be worse than
them to pass or collide? Neither is
inevitable; but unfortunately
seems probable. It is hoped good
people in both camps will work to
prevent that. History, decency and
common sense dictate that such
efforts be made.
