The famous and infamous in Israel
by Carl Alpert
HAIFA—This is the time of
year when we present our annual
list of the names which made
headlines in Israel during the past
12 months. Once listed, a name
may not reappear, so these artTin
effect the new headliners of the
year who command top attention
in Israel. The order is alphabetic.
The Brothers, the English
television serial, kept Israelis glued
to their sets for weeks on end. But
when the cast visited the country in
person they received a welcome
which ranged from royal honors to
mass adulation.
Jimmy Carter got the biggest
headlines, of course. His visit to
Jerusalem and his address before
the Knesset in his efforts to
advance the cause of Middle East
peace were more than just exciting
journalism. They were vital hist Ary
in the making.
Geulah Cohen, member of the
Knesset, fiery nationalist and
erstwhile supporter of Menachem
Begin, drew broad public attention
if not always approval, when she
turned against the Prime Minister
in a dramatic Knesset confronta
tion, charging that the peace treaty
with Egypt was a betrayal of Israel.
Semadar Haran personified the
tragedy at Nahariyah when Arab
terrorists broke into her home and
killed her husband and daughter.
The whole country held its breath
when she went on television and
told how she hid from the
murderers and unwittingly stifled
to death her second young
daughter in an effort to silence the
crying which would reveal their
hiding place.
Eduard Kuznetsov symbolized
the group of Prisoners of Zion
released from the Soviet Union in
the spring, apparently after
continuing pressure on the
Russian authorites. Kuznetsov
joined his wife, Sylva Zalmanson,
in Israel.
David Levy, Minister of
Immigrant Absorption and
Housing, once the butt of many
jokes deriding his naivete and lack
of education, has emerged during
the year as one of the powerful
figures in the Government, a man
with political clout both among the
masses and in the smoke-filled
rooms of the party bosses.
Prof. Benjamin Levich, Russian
scientist, made headlines when
after years of persistent
application, he was permitted to
leave the Soviet Union and come
to Israel.
Beialel Mizrachi was unhappy
with the headlines given him by the
daily paper, “Haaretz," which
called him one of the leaders of
organized crime in Israel. He
sued. While the court had few kind
words to say about him or his case,
it found that the paper had legally
gone too far in its accusations.
Yosef Nidam, an Israeli Jew,
was caught. red-handed in the
midst of his collaboration with
Arab terrorists to smuggle
explosives into Israel from across
the border and to plant huge
bombs in the middle of Jerusalem's
busy streets.
Aulcie Perry, an American
black, who stars with the Maccabi
Tel Aviv basketball team, made
headlines of a different kind when
Maccabi's rivals, the Hapoel team,
charged that Perry’s conversion to
Judaism in New York had not been
•‘kosher.” The accusation
backfired against the Labor
establishment.
How good is your memory? Do
you recall the story behind each of
the following who were last year’s
ten new headliners? Eliahu Ben-
Elissar, Yitzhak Chavet, Yitzhar
Cohen, Major Saad Hadad,
Shmuel Katz, Sammy Minter and
Zaish Dadon. Yitzhak Navon,
Anwar Sadat, Avital Scharansky.

Taylor prays for peace
JERUSAL.EM (JP)—Film actress Elizabeth Taylor arrived in
Israel recently as guest of Simcha Dinitz, former Ambassador to
the U.S. The star was welcomed by the ex-envoy at a reception at
the Jerusalem Hilton hotel after flying in from Cairo, aboard a jet
provided by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. The film actress
prayed for peace at the Western Wall. She said the experience was
“momentous—I felt the presence of God, and I really believe that
He listened.”
