Laura Cn»n of Tea neck, N.J.,
has begun a career at sea in order
to fulfill her ambitions on land—to
become an engineer. The 18-year-
old youth is studying to be an
ensign in the U.S. Merchant
Marine and is currently serving as
a cadet on a container ship making
ports of call in Spain. France, West
Germany and the Netherlands.
She was the only Jewish woman
enrolled at the academy in her first
year, though IS Jewish men were
also enrolled. Three other Jewish
women entered the academy this
vear.
Dr. Gerald Silver board, son of
Mr. and Mrs. LewisSilverboard of
Atlanta, has moved with his family
to Mobile, Ala., where he has a
full-time academic appointment in
the speciality of pediatric
neurology at the University of
South Alabama School of
Medicine. Dr. Silverboard^ who
also has a private practice in
neurology, received his training at
Emory University affiliated
hospitals.

Martin S. Brody of Savannah
has been named president of the
Greater Downtown Savannah
Merchants Association. Brody is
the owner of Parks University
Shop.
Defying inexorable official pressure, Jews of the farming
village of llyinka deep in rural Russia, pray in a makeshift
synagogue, in a photo obtained by the Student Struggle for Soviet
Jewry and Union of Councils for Soviet Jews. Almost all the
llyinkaites seek to leave for Israel, but are denied even the exit
applications. Fifteen families lucky enough to have been released
several years ago live in Jerusalem.

Consul General Joel Arnon. just
back from a month’s home leave in
Israel, will be the giiest speaker at
Friday evening services at the
Temple on Oct. 19. .Consul
General Arnon will report on his
meetings with Israel's foreign
minister and other senior
government officials.

The Atlanta Religious Mobilization Against Crime
(ARMAC), an interdenominational organization of religious
representatives, has planned a “Crime Prevention Month
Celebration Rally" at 3 p.m.. Sunday, Oct 28, in Central City
Park.
The group, formed at request of Mayor Maynard Jackson to
help fight crime in Atlanta, also scheduled a series of weekly
meetings throughout the month of October (Crime Prevention
Month) dealing with such topics as domestic violence,
unemployment, handgun control and alcohol and drug abuse.
