Ex-POC Altman will join
Sunday Freedom March
Anatoly Altman, a former
Soviet Prisoner of Conscience, will
be in Atlanta on Oct. 14 to join in
the community’s Simchat Torah
Freedom March.
Altman was one of the first
daring Jewish activists to be
arrested and tried by Soviet
authorities. Altman was arrested
along with Edward Kuznetsov,
Mark Dymshitz, Wolf Zalmanson
and others on their way to the
Leningrad airport. These 16 young
Jewish activists had tickets on an
internal Soviet flight from
Leningrad. Their dim hope was
that they would then fly the plane
to freedom in the West. In order
to insure that no other human lives
were risked, they had purchased all
the available seats on the plane and
Mark Dymshitz was a qualified
pilot.
They were almost certain to be
stopped as all were under constant
KGB surveillance. But the 16 men
felt that only such a daring act as
this could really bring world
attention to the plight of Soviet
Jewry.
Exactly six months later, after
two postponements, 11 of those
arrested, including Altman, went
on trial in a 200 seat courtroom in
Leningrad. Although it was
described by Tass as an open trial,
no foreign correspondents were
permitted to attend. Only a few
relatives, Tass reporters and
carefully screened members of
specific Soviet organizations were
allowed into the room. The
charges were: “betrayal of the
fatherland” (high treason);
“responsibility for the preparation
of a crime and for an attempted
crime;” "misappropriation of state
or public property” (an airplane);
“anti-Soviet agitation and
propaganda;” and “participation
in anti-Soviet organization.”
Kuznetsov and Dymshitz received
death sentences which, as a result
of the huge international outcry,
were reduced to 15 years. Anatoly
Altman was sentenced to 10 years
at hard labor.

activists even reached the plane,

Altman and four others were
released this April after serving
nine years in a Soviet prison. No
reason was given for their release,
but their commutation papers
were signed personally by
Breshnev and they were given visas
to immediately leave for Israel. It is
widely believed that Breshnev
ordered their release in order to
gain favor with the United States.

Soviet Jews into the headlines.
They were the catalyst for the
beginning of Soviet Jewry

And most importantly, it was
probably the risk they took and the
world attention they gained that
was responsible for the Soviet
