Larry Lowenstein of Atlanta has
been named director of
development for WABE-FM and
WETV, Channel 30, Atlanta's
public broadcasting affiliates.
Prior to joining WABE/WETV,
he was director of public relations
and community affairs at WRNG
Radio. He joined WRNG in 1977
as program director and before
that was director of marketing for
WXIA-TV.
Lowenstein also was director of
press information for the CBS
Television Network and director
of information services for the
Mutual Broadcasting System.
He is a member of numerous
professional organizations as well
as a member of the board of
directors of the Atlanta
Metropolitan Chapter of the
American Red Cross, vice
president of the American Jewish
Committee, and member of the
board of directors of the Atlanta
Branch of the NAACP.

Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld. chief
rabbi of Fairmount Temple in
Cleveland, Ohio, was recently
installed as president of the
Synagogue Council of America
(SCA).
Fifty-six oil paintings by
students of the Fay Gold
School of Art are currently on
exhibit at Temple Sinai
through the month of October.
Artists include Gloria
Benamy, Judy Price, Maury
Fradkin, Peggy Gaines, Sue
Piha, Mary Chacholiades,
Larry Plotkin, Trissy Cohen,
Frances Alter, Betty Cotton,
Charlotte Gordon and Selma
Burke.
Selma Burke will display her
paintings on Judaic themes
including the portrait of the
Hasidic boy shown above.
The exhibit will be open to
the public Mon.-Thur., 9a.m.-5
p.m.; Fri., 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and 8
-lOp.m.-Sat., 10:30 a.m.-12:30
p.m. and Sun., 9 a.m.-noon.
Stephen L. Sigal. son of Mr. and
Mrs. Myer Sigal of Macon, was
recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa
at Saybrook College, Yale
University. Stephen has been
president of the Southeast
Federation of Temple Youth and
was the recipient of a Dreyfuss
Fund Fellowship in chemistry the
summer of 1978. He will enter
medical school next fall after his
graduation from Yale in May
The Bar Mitzva of Michael
Sussman of Marietta will take
place at 10a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27,
at Temple Emanu-EI. A
congregational kiddush will
follow. Michael is the son of Neil
and Barbara Sussman and the
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Al
Ginsberg of Hollywood, Fla.

The Charlotte Lodge of B’nai
B'rith was recently awarded the
Sidney G. Kusworm Award for the
best overall community and
volunteer service program for
1979. The award is presented to a
B'nai B’rith lodge in the United
States or Canada which has been
judged to be the best of eight first
place winners from eight North
American B’nai B’rith districts. It
was created in tribute to Sidney
Kusworm who served as head of
the Community and Volunteer
Services Commission for more
than 40 years.
Allen S. Oxman, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jerome Oxman of Atlanta,
was president of the Charlotte
Lodge for 1978-79.

Nanette K. Wenger, M.D.,
professor of medicine at the Emory
University School of Medicine,
was the guest lecturer at the
Professional Women’s Group of
the Jewish Federation of
Cincinnati on Sept. 16.
She spoke about Jewish views of
contemporary health and medical
issues. Following the presentation,
she was presented with a key to the
city of Cincinnati as a symbol of
welcome and appreciation from
the Mayor.
Jerry Bailey was recently elected
president of Congregation Beth
Israel of Vidalia, Ga. Also elected
were Rickey Gross as vice
president, and Mrs. Ben Smith as
secretary-treasurer.
Other members in attendance
were Dane Foskey, Donald
Estroff, Ben Smith, Michael
Posner, Herman Bailey, and
Joseph Evans of Collins, Ga.
A sukkah was built by members
of the Congregation and a cookout
was held during the holiday week.
Guests included Rabbi and Mrs.
Shalom Strajecher and their
family from Savannah, Mr. and
Mrs. Morton Mooney, Ted
Buggom and Lou Shabbot from
Jesup, Ga.
Violinist Isaac Stern will
receive Pioneer Women’s 1979
Golda Meir Human Relations
Award at its national
convention in November. The
internationally-known vir
tuoso, currently on tour with
the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra, was designated the
American who made a
significant and major
contribution to the United
States-Israeli relations.
He is the second recipient of
this award, named for the late
Golda Meir with her consent.
The first, in 1977, was the late
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey.
Cheryl Dubrov of Atlanta
has been appointed assistant
director for the Southern
Hadassah Zionist Youth
Commission. The SHZYC
directs Hashachar/Youth
Judaea activities in Azor
Tichon Hadarom (the Mid-
Southern Region).
Miss Dubrov, a recent
graduate of the University of
Tennessee with a degree in
agriculture, has been active in
Young Judaea her entire life.
Working out of the Young
Judaea regional office in
Atlanta, she will be serving
portions of North Carolina,
South Carolina, Georgia,
Tennessee, Alabama, Missis
sippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
Her duties will include
conducting leadership training
seminars for Judaea club
leaders, fieldtripping across the
Southeast, working with
Hamagshimim (the college age
level of Hashachar), and
advising the regional executive
board for the Mid-Southern
Region of Young Judaea.
She joins the regional staff of
Paul Joffe, director, and Uzi
Stern, shaliach. Hashachar is
co-sponsored by Hadassah and
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center.
