Ahavath Achim hears
AJC’s Himmelfarb
The adult education committee
of Ahavath Achim Synagogue will
present Milton Himmelfarb at 8:15
p.m., Monday, Nov. 12, at the
synagogue.
Himmelfarb, who serves as
general director of information
and research for the American
Jewish Committee, wQl speak on
“The Dilemma of the American
Jews.” Author of “Jews of
Modernity,” he has held teaching
positions at the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America and is a
contributor to Commentary
Magazine.

AJCC/Zaban offers
driver’s ed. course
The Atlanta Jewish Community
Center will offer a driver’s
education course beginning
Thursday evening, Nov. 8, at the
Zaban Branch.
Kent Milner, an accredited
driving instructor and former
DeKalb police officer, will teach
the course, which includes six
hours of individual behind-the-
wheel instruction and 12 hours of
classroom time. Defensive driving
will be stressed.
Individuals who are at least 15
years old are eligible to participate.
Those who complete the course
will receive a certificate entitling
new drivers to reduced insurance
rates.

Columbus, Ga., plans
adult studies program
The Columbus Institute of
Adult Jewish Studies in
Columbus, Ga., will begin its 1979-
80 program on Sunday, Oct. 28,
with a performance by composer,
teacher, liturgical soloist and song
leader Debbie Friedman at Temple
Israel.
The program will continue on
Sunday, Dec. 2, with Rabbi
Gabriel Hie Schinazi who will
speak at Shearith Israel
Synagogue in Columbus. Rabbi
Schinazi was the representative
delegate for Lower Egypt during
the Nasser regime at all official
receptions and visits.
Rabbi Chaim Potok will be the
featured speaker on Sunday, April
27, at Temple Israel. Potok is
noted for his novels, “The
Chosen," “The Promise," “My
Name is Asher Lev," “In the
Beginning,” and “Wanderings.”
The Adult Jewish Studies will
hold i^mini-senes program on six
consecutive Sundays beginning
Jan. 6. Speakers will include Rabbi
Alfred Goodman, "Jewish
Reaction to the New Testament”;
Rabbi Ted Feldman, foundations
of “20th Century Anti-Semitism,"
and Rabbi Kenneth Leynwand,
“Biblical Sources of Redemption.”
Meltzer heads Dalton synagogue
Lou Meltzer will be installed as
1979-80 president of Temple Beth-
El in Ttalton, Ga., at Sabbath
services at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9,
at the synagogue.
Meltzer, who is vice president of
the Southeast region of the United
Synagogue of America, previously
served as president in 1974-75. He
has been chairman of the Israel
Bond Committee since 1976 and is
a member of the Dalton Jewish
Welfare Fund.
Henry Sender of Nashville,
president of the Southeast region
of the United Synagogue of
America, will be the installing
officer. Other officers who will be
installed with Meltzer include
Allen Finkel and Lester Goldberg,
vice presidents; Jeffrey Goldberg,
secretary, and Leo Koplon,
treasurer. Also to be installed are
Harry Saul, David Winkler, and
Meltzer
Marvin Youngerman, three-year
board members; Joel Cohen,
David Rice, and Martin
Weissman, two-year directors:
John Frank, Jack Lumiere, and
Nathan Snow, one-year directors;
and Ethel Funk, Ellen Richman,
and Joan Solomon, sisterhood
members appointed to the board.
Post 112 Ladies open fall season
The Ladies’ Auxiliary of Atlanta
Post No. 112, Jewish War
Veterans will hold its opening fall
meeting and brunch at 11:30 a.m.,
Sunday, Oct. 28, at the post home,
3840 Roswell Road.
Auxiliary members and

this past summer at the national
convention of the Jewish War
Veterans Ladies’ Auxiliary in San
Diego, Calif., are Action and
Jewish Affairs, Senior Citizens,
and Bess Taffel-V. A. V. S.

Hospital, Historian Book,
Servicewoman's Service, and
Veterans Affairs (plaques).
Honored for their work at the
Veterans Administration Medical
Center and attendance at V.A.V.S.

building on North Druid Hills
Road. Doors open at 7 p.m., with
the auction to begin at 7:30 p.m.

include hotel accommodations,
meals, a candy-filled pinata.
