Cobb women focus on identity
Plannint for the Oct. 29 Atlanta Jewish Federation’s Cobb County

Augustans examine ‘Jews in Peril’
A community-wide forum on
“Jews in Peril" will be held at 8
p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the
Augusta Jewish Community
Center.
The Educational Program, co
sponsored by Hadassah,
Federation’s Young Leadership and
tne JCC Adult Education
Committee, will feature Jack
Weintraub, executive director of
the Columbia. S.C., Jewish
Federation and JCC. He will
speak on Jews of the Soviet Union.
Eight members of the Atlanta
Section, National Council of
Jewish Women recently joined 400
women from NCJW chapters
across the United States at the
group’s 10th biennial Joint
Program Institute in Washington,
D.C., where they participated in
federal agency and legislative
briefings, seminars, and
workshops.
The institute was designed to
enable them to become more
effective local advocates in four of
NCJW’s top priority areas
women’s issues, children and

South Carolina, will also describe
the plight of the Jews in Latin
America and Shelly Sklar,
Augusta’s Jewish Federation and
JCC executive director, will
discuss Iranian Jewry. The
moderator of the panel will be
David Zacks.
The forum is open to the entire
community and is free of charge.

Among the highlights of the
institute was a White House
reception for the delegates, hosted
by Rosalynn Carter Mrs. Carter
was presented with a special award
in appreciation of her contribu
tions to the field of voluntarism.
Senator Henry M Jackson,
featured speaker at the institute's
closing foreign policy dinner, was
also honored by NCJW. He was
the recipient of the organization’s
Faith and Humanity Award for his
leadership in international human
rights.
Etz Chaim dedicates
newly acquired land
Congregation Etz Chaim will
officially dedicate its newly
acquired site of land, located on
Route 120 and Indian Hills
Parkway, on Sunday, Oct. 28,
from noon-1:30 p.m.
Rabbi Shalom Lewis and Ellis
Abrams, president, will lead the
ceremony. Lunch and a treasure
hunt for children will follow.
All members of the congrega
tion and interested families are
invited to attend. For further

AJCC facilities offer
free guest passes
The Atlanta Jewish Community
Center is offering nonmembers
and their families free guest passes
for use of facilities at the Peachtree
or Zaban Branch buildings
through Dec. 31.
Passes will only be issued at the
front desk of either building and
will entitle guests to three full days
at the facilities.
Membership to the AJCC is
open to the entire community. A
family membership, including
children through 21 years of age, is
$220. Personalized payment plans
are also available by calling Patsy
Goldberg at the Peachtree facility,
875-7881, or the Zaban Branch,
396-3250.
Israel Information Desk
opens Tuesday evenings
The Israel Information Desk,
staffed by Uzi Stern, will be open
on Tuesday evenings from 7-10
p.m., at the AJCC’s Peachtree
building.
Among the programs that are
available in Israel are Ulpan
programs, various kibbutz
programs, summer programs for
youth and students, universities in
Israel (for a year or more), post
graduate students for one year,
and Aliyah counseling.

AJCC/Zaban Branch
sponsors family Sundays
The Atlanta Jewish Community
Center will sponsor two Sunday
events for the family at the Zaban
Branch in early November.
The first activity is a family salad
and spaghetti supper at 5 p.m.,
Sunday, Nov. 4. The game room
and gymnasium will be available
for children.
The following Sunday, Nov. 11,
at 2 p.m., there will be a Super
Sundae party. Entertainment will
include parent-child relays and
cartoons.
