Mrs. Irene Gold
Mrs. Irene K. Gold, 57, of
Atlanta died Tuesday, Oct. 23.
Funeral service was held
Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Green
Lawn Chapel with Rabbi Harry
H. Epstein officiating. Interment
was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Gold was a member of
Ahavath Achim Synagogue and its
sisterhood, Hadassah, and B'nai
B’rith Women.
Survivors include her husband,
Morris Gold; mother, Mrs. Anne
Kaminsky of Atlanta; daughters,
Mrs. Linda Buford of Chattanoo
ga and Ms. Debbie Gold of
Atlanta; son. Martin Gold of
Charleston; brothers, Richard
Kaminsky of West Point, Ga., and
Jerry Kaminsky of Columbus,
Ga., and two grandsons.
Mrs. Esther Schwartz
Mrs. Esther Funk Schwartz, 96,
of Macon, wife of the late Louis E.
Schwartz, died Oct. 21.
Interment was in Sherah Israel
Cemetery in Macon with Rabbi
Robert L. Kravitz officiating.
Mrs. Schwartz, a native of
Hungary, moved to Macon in 1910
with her husband. At the time of
her death, she was the oldest
member of Congregation Sherah
Israel. She was also a member of
Sherah Israel Sisterhood and a life
member of Macon Chapter of
Hadassah.
Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Elsie S. Kruger
and Mrs. Sadie S. Gerson, both of
Macon; son, Harry M. Schwartz
of Macon; brother, Herman Funk
of San Francisco; four
grandchildren and nine great
grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family
requests contributions be made to
Congregation Sherah Israel and
Macon Chapter of Hadassah.
Meyer Rosenthal
Meyer Rosenthal of Oslo,
Norway, died Saturday, Oct. 6.
Funeral service was held
Wednesday, Oct. 10, in Oslo.
Mr. Rosenthal was a native of
Poland.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Marie Rosenthal; son, Benno
Rosenthal of Cleveland, Ohio;
sisters, Mrs. Sally Smulevitz of
Savannah and Mrs. Lola Kroll of
Montreal, Canada, and one
granddaughter.
Mrs. Sylvia Kaliser
Mrs. Sylvia Z. Kaliser, 66, of
Atlanta died Thursday, Oct. 25.
Graveside service was held
Sunday, Oct. 28, at Shearith Israel
Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
Mrs. Kaliser, formerly of
Minneapolis, lived in Atlanta 23
years. She was a Golden Honor
member of Chavyrot Chapter of
B'nai B’rith Women and a member
of Hadassah and City of Hope.
Survivors include her husband,
Mike A. Kaliser; sons. Dale E.
Kaliser of Atlanta and Dr. Lyle A.
Kaliser of Dallas; sister, Mrs.
Pauline Kirschbaum of Minneap
olis; and brothers, Walter and
Rueben Leiderman, also of
Minneapolis.
Mrs. Phyllis Turkat
Mrs. Phyllis Turkat, 52, of
Atlanta died Wednesday, Oct. 24.
Graveside service was held
Thursday, Oct. 25, at Greenwood
Cemetery with Rabbi Harry H.
Epstein officiating.
Mrs. Turkat was a member of
Ahavath Achim Synagogue.
Survivors include her husband,
Mike Turkat; parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Sam Schiff of Atlanta; sons.
Dr. David Turkat and Ira Turkat,
both of Atlanta, and one
grandson.

1976.
In 1977, President Carter
appointed Strauss as Special
Trade Representative to the
Multilateral Trade Negotiations.
Over the next two years, Strauss
successfully concluded involved
worldwide negotiations which
culminated in the Trade Act of
1979.
In community life, Ambassador
Strauss has been president of the
Congregation Emanu-el in Dallas,
vice president of the Greater
Dallas Jewish Federation,
president of Goodwill Industries of
Dallas, director of the University
of Texas Foundation and
numerous other civic organiza
tions.
The Delegate Assembly of the
Atlanta Jewish Federation was
created as a forum for the
discussion of matters relating
specifically to the Federation and
questions of general concern to the
Jewish community. It is made up
of the senior rabbi of each temple
and synagogue in metropolitan
Atlanta, the board of the Atlanta
Jewish Federation, and delegates
from the many Jewish organiza
tions in Atlanta. Among the many
organizations with members on
the Delegate Assembly are ORT,
the American Jewish Committee,
the Jewish War Veterans, the
Standard Club, and Hadassah.
Delegates also represent the
Federation’s local beneficiary
agencies, such as the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center, the
Jewish Home, and the Jewish Day
Schools. The Delegate Assembly is
comprised of over 200 people.

David Putterman
NEW YORK (JTA)—Funeral
services were held Oct. 12 for
David Putterman, who was cantor
at the Park Avenue Synagogue in
Manhattan for 33 years until his
retirement in 1976. HediedOct. 10
at the age of 79.
Putterman was also featured
soloist on “The Eternal Light” on
NBC for which the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America
cited him in 1969 after 25 years of
service on radio and television. As
cantor at Park Avenue Synagogue
since 1933, he sought new liturgical
music for synagogues and
commissioned leading composers
in the United States and Israel to
write it.
A cantor since the age of 18, he
was a founder of the Cantors
Assembly of America and was a
leader of the Cantors Institute of
the Jewish Theological Seminary
where he taught for more than 20
years. In 1954 he became the first
fellow of the Cantors Institute and
in 1971 he was given the first
National Jewish Music Council
Award. His efforts to encourage
new liturgical music made him the
first cantor to receive a special
citation of merit from the
American Society of Composers,
Authors and Publishers.
