Atlanta AZA chapter
to celebrate 50th year
In 1924, the first true
organization for Jewish youth was
formed—the Aleph Zadik Aleph
(AZA). Six years later this
organization came to Atlanta in
the form of chapter No. 134.
Its founder was a man highly
respected in the community—
Louis J. Levitas. He was the
chapter’s first adviser, and later
the chapter took his name as its
own.
In 1980 the chapter will be SO
years old making it one of the
oldest in the United States.
The 50th Anniversary Reunion
is in the planning stages. What
started out as a small chapter event
has turned into what will be a
major event in the Atlanta Jewish
community. The adult board of the
B'nai B'rith Youth Organization is
helping to plan the even, which will
take place on Jan. 4 and 5.
Friday night will feature services
at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue,
while Saturday night will be a
banquet at a hotel yet to be named.
The adult board hopes to raise
money to help keep all programs
funded.
The event will have speakers
from different generations of 134
chapters. Former members who
have not been contacted can write:
50 Anniversary Committee, 1345
Old Woodbine Rd., Atlanta, Ga.
30319.
1930 Charter members were:
Sam Alterman, Nace R. Cohen,
Leo M. Frankel, Edward Gayron,
Nathan Gershon, Joseph Glazer,
David M. Goldstein.
Irving L. Greenberg, Leonard
Greenbaum, Ralph Hillman,
Reuben Kessler, Louis Klein,
Isador Kuniansky, Sidney Parks.
Milton Rauzin, Alfred
Rosenthal, Sidney Silver, Izzy M.
Tendrich, Albert Unger, Edward
R. Vajda, Simon Wender.

The pageant represents a
breakthrough for Israel’s
traditionally-oriented Arab

sensibilities of the Arab
community, the swim suit
competition was eliminated and
contestants took park in the more
modestly attired evening gown
competition.
