The boy behind Sabraman
by Simon Griver
Eighteen months ago we
reported on Uri Fink, the
remarkable young comic book
cartoonist who created the
character of Sabraman, the Israeli
super-hero who operates from
somewhere in the Judean Desert
and grapples with such sinister
villains as Naziman.
Then, Uri was 14 and had just
had his first comic book published.
The book, which sells at around a
dollar, has since sold more than
15,000 copies. Now Uri, who has
recently turned 16, is beginning to
attract attention outside Israel,
too. He appears to be on the road
to realizing the enormous potential
which he has been showing since he
started to draw at the age of six.
Uri is himself a sabra. His
parents fled from Germany and
settled in Israel during the 1930s.
Ever since he could read, he has
been an avid fan of comics and
their heroes; Superman, Batman,
Green Lantern, Flash...You name
them, he has them, in sets
constituting thousands — the
largest collection of comic books
in all Israel. Unlike most kids he
was not satisfied simply to read the
comics, so he started to make his
own.
“During our English lessons,”
recalls Uri, “we used to read special
easy English . newspapers. 1
thought that my ofrtbbhs, written
in English, might be suitable for
these papers. So I sent some
samples to David Herman, whose
company published the news-

papers. At that time I was 13."
It was Herman who suggested to
Uri the idea of Sabraman and the
two haven't looked back since. The
original was in English but by
popular demand, the comic was
translated into Hebrew.
Surprisingly, Uri does most of
his drawing at school. However, he
says this is not at the expense of his
lessons. “I am able to follow the
lesson and draw at the same time,"
he explains. “Of course, every new
teacher that comes along doubts
this and so once in a while they'll
stop and ask me what they’ve just
said. After a few correct answers
most doubters are convinced.
However, my French teacher will
have none of it and refuses to allow
me to draw during her class. As an
artist it is easy for me to get
revenge. The villian in my third
Sabraman book is based on her!”
Uri is shy, sensitive and reserved
but speaks with immense charm
and humor. He knows what he
wants and has a clear picture of
where he is going. The baby-faced
13-year-old, pictured on the back of
his first book, is now sprouting
whiskers. As the years pass, does
he feel that his work is maturing?"
“I wrote my first book at 13 and
the second at 15." says Uri. “When
I look over the two, I am far more
satisfied with the second. The
drawing is crisper, the characters
are more rounded and better
developed and the humor is
sharper.
“In two years time I will have to
enter the army until I am 21 but
even then I hope to have some
spare time in which to draw. After
that I intend going to university to
study graphics. As for the rest,
we’ll just have to wait and see."
