Shearith Israel sponsors JNF project in Israel
Special to The Southern Israelite
Shearith Israelites can now
boast that their congregation is the
first in Georgia to individually
adopt a major land reclamation
project in Israel through the
Jewish National Fund.
This project, which will be
known as Nachalat Shearith Israel
will cause 20 dunams of lifeless
desert to be turned into flourishing
farmland at Moshav Hatzeva in
the burning Arava—the area
which lies in the depression
between the Dead Sea and the Red
Sea near Eilat.
Some 100 families live at
Hatzeva and for the settlement to
realize its potential more land must
be prepared. It is a common
misconception that the JNF
prepares land only for agriculture.
All the land on all the new
settlements in Israel is prepared by
the Jewish National Fund for
farming, housing, health services
and even for administrative
buildings.
Shearith Israel's action will see
to it that salty soil is washed and
de-stoned and presented to settlers
for growth of their vegetables and
fruits which are exported daily to
the European Common Market.
This is a land where the total
rainfall is no more than two
inches per year and where the daily
temperature hovers around 100
degrees Fahreheit.
Shearith Israel members can
imagine a step furthur into the
future as they take the challenge of
making the desert bloom as the
rose. In the book of Isaiah, chapter
35 it is said:
" The wilderness and the solitary
place shall be glad for them: and
the Arava shall rejoice as the rose."
