Norman H. Diamond, president
of Ahavath Achim Synagogue,
and Robert A. Kmitr executive
director, chaired recent sessions of
the Biennial Convention of the
United Synagogue of America
which was held the week of Sox
11-15 in Kiamasha Lake. VY.

Hyman Meltr has also been
elected a vice president of the
United Synagogue and another
past president. Dr. William E.
Schatten has been elected to the
advisory council.
Martin S. Klein has been named
director of the Southern regional
office of the American ORT
Federation, based in Atlanta.
For the past six years, Klein was
Southern Appeals Director for the
Anti-Defamation League. Prior to
that, he was associated with the
National Jewish Hospital, the
American Jewish Committee and
the United Jewish Appeal. He is
married to the former Frances
Manheim of Atlanta.
Jack 1. Freedman; chairman of
the region, said, “We have two
primary objectives: the enlarge
ment of our membership
throughout the eight-state region,
and to provide support for the
extensive ORT programs in Israel
and throughout the Jewish world.
We are certain that with his
knowledge of Southern communi
ties and experience in organiza
tional work, Martin Klein will be
an asset to ORT in this part of the
country."
The Bar Mitzva of Mark Evan
Hyman of Atlanta will take place
at 4 45 p.m.. Saturday. Dec. 8. at
Congregation Shearith Israel.
Mark is the son of Sylvia and
Barry Hyman. Grandparents are
Samuel Hyman of High Point,
N.C.. and the late Sarah Hyman,
and the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex

Dr. Ephraim E'rankel of
Atlanta, director of the Hebrew
Academy since 1967, will deliver
the invocation at the general
session of the Southern
Association of Elementary and
Secondary Schools annual
conference to be held Dec. 9-12, at
the Atlanta Hilton. Some 3,000
delegates are expected to attend.
Dr. Frankel has also been
invited to chair the session on
“Elementary School Leadership
Personnel.”
Dr. Arnold J. Tillinger of
Savannah has been elected
president of the Savannah Jewish
Council. He succeeds Aaron M.
Levy, who served as president for
two years.

Judy Kogon (left) and Dr. Fred Katz (right), recipients of the
1979 Abe Schwartz Young Leadership award of the Atlanta Jewish
Federation, were among 136 young leadership award winners
honored at the recent Council of Jewish Federations General
Assembly in Montreal. They were cited for superior contributions
to their local communities. Above, Mrs. Kogon and Dr. Katz are
with Bobbie Klotz, vice chairperson of the national leadership
development committee.
Esther R. l ands of Salt Take
City, immediate past president of
the National Council of Jewish
Women, is one of 20 members
named by President Carter to the
newly created Commission for a
National Agenda for the ’80s. The
commission will examine major
national concerns including
inflation, energy and demographic
population shifts and will make
general recommendations in a
report scheduled for completion
some time after the 1980
presidential elections.
Mrs. Landa completed four
years as president of the National
Council of Jewish Women last
March'.
Gameroom tournaments for
youth aged seven-15 at the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center's
Zaban Branch on Sunday. Oct. 28
and Nov. 4 filled the center with
shouts of mirth and victory.
