SineleScene

If you are lonely and think you
need a sweetheart, you may be
barking up the wrong tree. Maybe
you just need something that
barks. Or meows, or chirps. Pets
have their advantages. They never
ask to go dutch and they never talk
about their old girlfriends.
Of course there are disadvan
tages. Boyfriends don’t have to be
walked and very few dates will
have a litter of kittens in the back
of your closet.
Some people go for aquariums.
Although the gentle motions of
fish are therapeutic to some, I find
it reprehensible to pay $20 for
some species guaranteed to live less
than 10 minutes.
Hamsters and their cousins are
nice. It’s a little weird to actually
own one unless you are under 10.
A cat is a non-pet. It is the only
living thing that can look at you as
if to say, "Oh? Are you still here?”
Dogs are tops when it comes to
returning love. Nothing warms a
person’s heart more than the wag
of a tail. However, wagging tails
and mistakes on the carpet go paw
in paw.
Hermit crabs are clean and quiet
but boring.
Somewhere out there is a
companion for you. Be it a goat or
python or a dandie dinmont, a pet
is always willing to listen to your
side and never argues. And who
knows, there was once a young
lady that got a handsome prince
from kissing her pet frog.

Havanah ‘understands’
What is Havanah North? For
that matter, what is Havanah?
Havanah, the Hebrew word for
understanding, is also the name of
a Jewish special education
program which gives children with
a variety of specific learnihg
problems the chance to study with
Sunday and Hebrew school
teachers specially trained to
understand them.
What kind of “understanding”
do Havanah students need?
For a variety of reasons, some
children do not experience success
in their regular congregational
classroom. Perceptual difficulties,
lags in motor development,
behavior and communication
problems—in fact, the whole range
of difficulties that may be called
“learning disabilities"—are among
the most common reasons for this
lack of success. Other problems
include hearing and visual
difficulties.
Havanah North is a new branch
of this program, designed to serve
families in the North Metro
Atlanta area. Co-sponsored by the
Atlanta Bureau of Jewish
Education and several North
Atlanta synagogues, the program
meets at the new Zaban Branch
AJCC on Sunday mornings and at
Temple Sinai for Tuesday
afternoon Hebrew class. Ms. Sue
Weingarten, assisted by Ms. Betsy
Bravman, teaches the Sunday
Judaic class. Mrs. Naomi
Binenfeld teaches the Tuesday
class, assisted by Mrs. Elaine
Friedlander. '
These new classes supplement
the regular Havanah program
which meets on Sundays at the
Hebrew Academy and on
Wednesday afternoons at
Congregation Or VeShalom.
This year’s opening of Havanah
North is an opportunity for
families in the North metro area
who know that their children need
a little extra “understanding.”
Further information is available
from the Atlanta Bureau of Jewish
Education, 873-1248.
