Getting the job done
Richard Jackson and the JNF
Jackson with JNF Blue Box in hand.
Special to The Southern Israelite
Richard Jackson, president of
the First Georgia Bank, is a man of
many hats. He is a husband, a
father, a banker, a volunteer and a
jogger. His philosophy is “If you
see a job that needs to be done, you
get in there and do the job. When
you are finished, you find
something else that needs to be
done.” That is how he helped the
First Georgia Bank turn its losses
into profits.
When Jackson was approached
to serve as chairman of Business
and Industry for the Jewish
National Fund Dinner, which will
be held on Saturday, Jan. 12,
1980, at the Regency Hyatt House,
he willingly accepted. Serving as a
major in the Marine Corps during
the Vietnam War, he saw the
effects of a country laid barren
from the ravages of war. He said,
“We take our beautiful
environment for granted. It would
be unfortunate to lose it.” The
Jewish National Fund is helping
Israel build a beautiful
environment. Israelis are taking
desert sand and turning it into
productive land. “Anyone who
loves the outdoors has to feel for
this project,” continued Jackson.
Jackson said he feels it is very
important for Jews and non-Jews
to work together to establish the
Interfaith State of Georgia Forest
in Israel. “Working together
demonstrates a regard for other
people's faith, their beliefs and
their regard for their roots.” He
added, “By working together we
create closer ties and a binding
together of people. This is what has
made America the great melting
pot that it is.
"Our bank should participate in
and support causes good for
society in educational, humanitar
ian and economic ways. This
builds a healthy community. We
try to participate in as many things
as possible," said Jackson.
Jackson is a member of the
Javcees, the Optimist Club, the
Kiwanis Club, Boys Clubs and the
Chamber of Commerce. He is a
member of the advisory council of
the “Hugh O’Brian Youth
Council,” a national youth
leadership program for I Oth
through 12th grade students. He
has served on dinner committees
for the National Jewish Hospital in
Denver and the National
Conference of Christians and
Jews.
“I don’t want to be known as a
great humanitarian," Jackson
concluded modestly, “1 am just
doing a job.
