JNF awards Blue Box charm
Mrs. Gertie Shulman of Atlanta (right) proudly wears a gold
Blue Box chain presented to her by Mrs. Janice Nodvin,
chairperson of the Jewish National Fund Blue Box Committee for
the JNF Women’s Division. Mrs. Shulman, who received this
award at her place of business downtown, commented that she had
done nothing special, but had simply continued a family tradition
of giving imparted by her parents in Europe.

AJCC previews Orff talent method
AJCC offers new
cultural arts classes
Members and non-members of
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center can participate in
upcoming cultural arts classes for
adults at the center's two locations.
New offerings include Stained-
glass making, Basic Camera,
Wheel Ceramics, as well as Tap
Dance, Modern Dance, Non-
Loom Weaving and Painting.
All classes are taught by
professional artists, with Jim Berry
directing the glass class; Genese
Grad, ceramics, and Ellen
Koransky in the camera division
Most classes run for eight weeks
and meet days or evenings. The
School of M usic also offers private
instruction in all orchestra
instruments as well as voice
lessons.
Classes in the visual arts and
music instruction will begin in
January. Call 875-7881 for further
information about classes at the
Peachtree or Dunwoody locations.
Senior adults display
paintings at AJCC
Paintings by the senior adults of
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center are now on display at the
Center’s Peachtree facility.
Working under the direction of
Emi Mackmiller, these seniors
have produced a variety of images
in acrylic and pastel. Subject
matter includes animals, flowers
and religious scenes.
The public is invited to view this
exhibition Monday through
Thursday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m.; Friday
until 5 p.m., and Sunday until 6
p.m.
JNF honors Joel Grey,
Galilee project sponsors
Joel Grey
On Jan. 13, at half past
midnight, immediately following
the second annual Jewish National
Fund Dinner Dance, the advanced
gifts committee will host a
breakfast at the home of Amy and
Marvin Singer.
Joint honorees will be Joel Grey,
distinguished actor, and advance
project sponsors. This group of
dedicated Georgians are among
the many who have helped make
the State of Georgia Forest in the
Galilee a reality.

A free demonstration of the Orff
method for developing musical
talent in youngsters aged three-six
will be given at the Dunwoody
Branch of the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center at 4 p.m.,
Sunday, Jan. 6.
Portia Hawkins, staff member
of the AJCC School of Music, will
lead the demonstration.
The Orff method of music
education utilizes body movement,
games and nursery rhymes to
introduce music fundamentals to
young children
Achim Lodge begins
1980 with new officers
Achim Lodge of B'nai B’rith
recently held elections for its 1980
officers.
Officers elected at the lodge’s
December meeting include Ron
Chanin. president; Steve
Goldfarb, Art Vener, Richard
Siegel. Hal Rubin, vice presidents;
Phil Redisch, recording secretary;
Andy Adler, corresponding
secretary; Barry Frankel,
treasurer, and Randy Padawer,
chaplain.
The next meeting will be held at
6:30 p.m , Thursday, Jan. 10, at the
Western Sizzlin Restaurant in
Buckhead. Future lodge activities
include an installation banquet to
be held in February.

Ms. Hawkins, a magna cum
laude graduate of Fisk University
and master’s recipient in piano
performance from Yale Univer
sity, has held teaching positions in
piano, theory and Orff instruction.
Ms. Hawkins, who is also a
piano faculty affiliate at Emory
University, will begin an Orff-style
class for children three-six years of
age at the Dunwoody Branch of
the AJCC beginning in January.

Jewish War Veterans will hold its
annual latke party at 7:30 p.m.,
Sunday, Dec. 23. at the Willow
Creek Apartments Clubhouse.
The Post will honor three
Russian families who are among
the newest arrivals to Atlanta, and
members will help them celebrate
their first Hanuka
All members who pay 1980 dues
will be guests of the Post.
