Children speak out about the holidays
by Ellen Bernstein
When 1 was in the sixth grade,
we spent weeks preparing for the
holiday pageant. Each parent
received a personalized ditto sheet
invitation for the show. Opening
morning the auditorium was
packed. My mother sat near the
stage with her carpool cronies, her
smile as bright as the flashcubes of
her Polaroid.
The curtain rose. A crumpled
mural, painted black and
splattered with stars, stretched
across the stage. One star (east of
the cafeteria) shone brighter than
the rest. The chorus began to hum
"The Little Drummer Boy.” That
was my cue. I stepped on stage and
nearly tripped over the fitted sheet
wrapped around my body. Two
classmates followed me, also
wearing the latest in early
Babylonian. We walked in figure
eights on a rather circuitous
journey to bring gifts to the baby
Jesus. As we marched ' to
Bethlehem, my mother marched to
the principal’s office. That was the
last year a holiday pageant took
place at Luxmanor Elementary
School.
This holiday season, 1 talked to
three Jewish children in Atlanta,
about their feelings concerning the
Christmas and Hanuka celebra
tion in the schools.
Christmas or no Christmas,
children don’t like to feel different
or left out. Although some Jewish
children feel uncomfortable about
participating in Christmas
activities, many join in because of
the fun, the parties, the cookies
and candy canes, and the chance to
decorate a tree with pretty
ornaments.
The children I interviewed don’t
want to see the Christmas
celebration taken out of the
classroom. What came out in our
discussions was the hope that
someday the school board will
ratify an Equal Holidays
Amendment.
Jana Wolkow, a second grader
at Nancy Creek Elementary
School, participates in the holiday
festivities. “But,” she says, “If 1 was
the teacher and I’m going to be a
teacher—I would want to put more
Hanuka in my class.” She sees
“more parties” as the biggest
advantage to celebrating both
Hanuka and Christmas in the
schools.
Jana also feels that since she is
the only Jewish person in her class,
she must create her own Hanuka
by asking the teacher if she can
make Jewish ornaments instead of
the Christmas decorations that the
other kids are making.
Darren Price, a fifth grader at
High Point Elementary School,
attends a nonsecular holiday
party, but they show filmstrips,
mostly about Christmas He says,
"The two holidays should be
mixed so nobody sits there talking
about one thing. You can talk
about Christmas, but there are
children who celebrate Hanuka
and they’re left out. If I was the
teacher, I’d make it half and half so
nobody would feel left out.”
Although she maintains a strong
Jewish identity, Marcy Bernstein
participates in the classroom
"baby Jesus” bible readings, the
Christmas pageant, the tree
decorating and the Christmas
party. However, thesixthgrader at
Morningside Elementary School is
concerned about the an(j-
