been promoted to private first class
in the Army at Fort Hood. Texas.
He graduated advanced trainingat
Fort Hood Dec. I as a clinical
specialist working in a troop
hospital after completing his basic-
training at Fort Lconardwood.

The Bar Mit/va of Jav Neil
Wasserman of Atlanta will take
place at 8:30a.m., Saturday. Jan. 5
at Congregation Shearith Israel. A
congregational kiddush will
follow. Jay is the son of Dr. and
Mrs. Allan Wasserman.

Rabbi Lawrence Meltzer (center) of the Fiebrew Academy
receives the first Schatten Scholarship in Judaic Studies at Emory
University from Dr. and Mrs. William Schatten of Atlanta. The
Schatten Scholarship is paid annually for tuition in the graduate or
undergraduate program of Judaic studies, with a^preference for
students working toward a master of arts in teaching degree. Mrs.
Schatten is the daughter of I.T. Cohen, the principal contributor to
the Jay and Leslie Cohen Chair of Judaic Studies in the
Department of Religion at Emory.

in Lafayette Park across from the White House. Nearby, a 30-foot,
5,000 pound neon-lit menorah had been erected by American
Friends of Lubavitch. Jay Ei/enstal said the blessings at the
menorah lighting. Brian and Jay are the sons of Presidential
Adviser Stuart Eizenstat and his wife. Fran, formerly of Atlanta.
Joel Rosenfeld of Atlanta has
been elected into Tau Beta Pi
national engineering honor society
at Georgia Institute of
Technology. This honor is in
recognition of superior
scholarship and exemplary
character. Joel is the son of Joan
and Bob Rosenfeld
Sidney Feldman of Atlanta
has been named to serve on the
board of directors of the
Council of Jewish F ederations.
A past president of the Atlanta
Jewish Federation and
currently Southeastern
chairman of the United Jewish
Appeal, F eldman has long been
an activist and leader in Jewish
communal affairs in Atlanta
and nationally.
CJF' board members are
drawn from the leadership of
local federations. In addition,
individuals selected to chair
CJF committees automatically
serve on the board of directors.
The Council of Jewish
Federations is the association
of more than 190 federations,
welfare funds and community
councils which serve nearly 800
communities and embrace over
95 percent of the | Jewish
population of the United States
and Canada.
I)r. Jonathan D. Winner of
Atlanta has been elected chief of
pediatrics of Northside Hospital.
In addition to his responsibilities
at the hospital. Dr. Winner is on
the board of Ahavath Achim
Synagogue where he is the
membership committee chairman.
He is also a member of the board of
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center and serves on the Barney
Medintz Camp committee. Dr.
Winner is a member of Pediatrics
and Adolescent Medicine,
Pennsylvania.

The American Red Magen
David (or Israel (ARMDI)
recently presented President
Anwar Sadat of Egypt with the
ARMDI Humanitarian Award. In
a personal note to ARMDI,
President Sadat expressed his
devotion to the search for peace in
the Middle East and his conviction
that diplomatic relations between
Egypt and Israel would “reshape
the pattern of life into a peaceful
and purposeful one."

Knauer of Miami were married
Nov. 10 at Ahavath Achim

Goodfriend performed the
ceremony.
The bride was given in marriage
by her parents. Her sister. Miss
Regina Elkan, was maid of honor.
Miss Debby Knauer, sister of the
bridegroom, was t(ie bridesmaid.
M iss Ellen Patterson kept the
bride’s book.
Brian Oilier of Miami Beach was
the best man. Dr. David Hockberg
and Dr. Wayne Suway were the
groomsmen. Included in the
wedding procession were Mr. and
Mrs. Knauer
Mrs. Max Knauer of New York,
grandfather of the bridegroom.
A reception and seated dinner
was held at the synagogue
following the ceremony.
After a wedding trip to
Acapulco, the newlyweds will
reside in Miami

Mrs. Joan Kornman and Jacob
S. Kornman, both of Atlanta,
announce the engamement of their
daughter. Sherryl Ann. to Howard
Alexander Kohr. son of Mr. and
Mrs. Kurt Kohr of University
Heights. Ohio. 1 and the late Mrs.
Katherine Kohr.
Miss Kornman will receive her
B.A. in animal behavior from
Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio,
in May.
Mr. Kohr received his M P A.
Holtz-Rubin
from George Washington
University and is employed by the
American Jewish Committee in
Boston.
Miss Kornman is the
granddaughter of Mr and Mrs.
Harry Orlin of Miami Beach and
Mrs. Ann Kornman and the late
Joe Kornman of Nashville. She is
the great-granddaughter of the late
Mrs. Etta Cuba of Atlanta.
An August wedding is planned.
