Over $1,250,000 was pledged to the Atlanta Jewish Federation’s 1980 Campaign at the Advance Gifts dinner held recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Selig Jr. This reflects a 41 percent increase over last year’s gifts. The I980’s top leadership function brought together contributors in the $25,000 and over category in support of what campaign chairman, Ely Freedman, described as “the most important peace year campaign in the history of Israel." Louis J. Taratoot, who led the fund raising, spoke of the need for total commitment. “Nothing less than total commitment can produce what is needed to sustain Jewish life at home and abroad." The Honorable Ephriam Evron, Ambassador of the State of Israel to the United States, guest of honor for the evening, spoke of the “staggering economic cost of peace to Israel's people as they begin to implement the terms of the treaty with Egypt." The cost of peace he said, “will accelerate inflation, national indebtedness and an unfavorable balance of payments at rates not yet predictable. They will strain the capacity of the already overburdened Israeli taxpayer., and challenge the will and commitment of their partners in the Jewish communities of the free world."
