Inter-agency "meeting I Synagogil6S to Observe
planned for savannah 1980 ‘Federation Shabbaf
A watershed event in the history
of cooperation between national
Jewish agencies will take place
Feb. 15-17 at the first inter-agency
Conference for Southeast Small
Cities, to be held at the DeSoto
Hilton in Savannah.
The Council of Jewish
Federations is the coordinating
agency for the conference, which is
co-sponsored by CJF, United
Jewish Appeal, the Jewish Welfare
Board, the American Association
for Jewish Education, and the
National Jewish Community
Relations Advisory Council.
Through the inter-agency
conference, counselling on the
specialized services represented by
each of these agencies will be made
available directly to lay and
professional leaders of Southeast
Federations. The theme of the
program is “The Agenda of Jewish
Concern: Planning for a Healthy
Jewish Community," viewed from
the perspective of the circum
stances and needs of small
communities in the southeast
states. ,
Dr. Bernard Reisman, director
of the Homstein Program in
Jewish Communal Service at
Brandeis University, will act as
scholar-in-residen^e.
Dr. Reisman / will lead the
opening Kabbalat Shabbat
discussion Friday, Feb. 15," on “I
Am My Brother’s Keeper,”
considering the role of the Jewish
leader, criteria for the selection of
leadership, and Jewish identity.
Robert Eisenstein of Nashville,
past chairman of the CJF National
Committee on Small Cities, will
chair the session.
On Saturday morning, Feb. 16,
Dr. Reisman will give an over
view of community concerns,
followed by small group
discussion.
Campaign techniques, Soviet-
Jewish resettlement, community
relations, and formal and informal
educational programming will be
covered in workshops on Sunday,
-Feb. 17, run by participating
national agencies.
The CJF is the association of
more than 190 Federations,
Welfare Funds and Community
Councils which serve nearly 800
communities and embrace over 95
percent of the Jewish population
of the United States and Canada.
The Atlanta Jewish Federation is a
member of the Council of Jewish
Federations.
Atlanta Jewish Federation has
declared Friday, Feb. 15, and
Saturday, Feb. 16, as “Federation
Shabbat" to coincide with the
fourth annual United Jewish
Appeal National Shabbat that will
be observed in synagogues
throughout the country.

Goldstein Leadership Enrichment
Program have been announced by
the Atlanta Jewish Federation.
The program, announced in last
week’s Southern Israelite, was
established to aid in the
development of potential
communal leaders in Atlanta.
The participants in the program
for 1980 are:

with Shabbat Shekalim,"
explained Rabbi Wilson, “because
the Biblical portion for that day
deals with the responsibility of all
Jews to maintain Jewish life and
Judaism. The word shekalim is

During the “Federation
Shabbat," congregations will focus
on the concept of tzedakah and the
work of the Atlanta Jewish
Federaton in supporting and
strengthening Jewish life at home
and abroad. Tzedakah is taken
from Tzedek, a Hebrew root
meaning justice, that which is right.

Bomb explodes In Rehovot
TEL AVIV (JTA)—A young mother and her three-year-old
daughter were seriously injured and four other people were hurt
when a bomb exploded on the main street in the center of Rehovot
Sunday morning. According to police, the bomb was placed in a
garbage can near the local police station. Dozens of Arabs who
were in Rehovot were rounded up for questioning, police said.
