The adage that doctors make
the Worst patients, a saying
many purses swear by, may be
an understatement when
dealihg with the case of Dr. Mel
J. Coton.
Two months ago, Dr. Colon,
an , East Cobb podiatrist,
contracted pneumonia and was
confined to bed for 10 days'
recuperation. Not content to sit
still for any length of time and
feeling the need to do
something, he began making
phone calls inquiring whether
there was still time to organize
an East Cobb location for
WSB-TV’s Health Fair
scheduled for April 20.
Kim Edmonds, the metro
politan Atlanta Health Fair
coordinator, informed him that
he was three and one-half weeks
past the deadline to establish an
East Cobb site for the
public health screening service.
He was given three days to put
together the necessary
contingent of sponsors,
volunteers and publicity to
make the project a success.
A determined man who
believes that "anything can get
done within reason," Dr. Colon
was not about to pull the coven
over the problem. The closest
Health Fair far East Cobb
residents was a 20 minute ride,
an inconvenience that would
prevent many from utilizing the
service.
Dr. Colon’s biggest problem
was enlisting the help of names
to volunteer their time due to the
critical nursing shortage in the
city. But after dozens upon dozens
of bedside phone calls, he was
finally able to secure the assistance
of enough nurses and doctors to
hold the fair.
After solving this initial
problem, the pieces of the
administrative puzzle began to
fall into place. Dodgen
Community Middle School at
1728 Bill Murdock Road in
Marietta agreed to house the
Health Fair in its gynwasium,
doctors and the( McDonald's
and Pepsi companies ,fcnt their
financial support, a}*d the East
Cobb Emergency Medical
Center made up 10,000 flyers to
publicize the fair. In addition,
students at Walton High
School offered to assist the
medical and lay volunteers.
The East Cobb site is one of the
few where all examinations will
be given, including vision,
hearing, blood chemistry (the
only one which is not free),
glaucoma, podiatry, lung
capacity, self-breast examina-
tions and oral cancer.
Although Dr. Colon may not
be an ideal patient, his efforts
while recuperating from ;
pneumonia will help many
individuals in East Cobb who
otherwise might have become
hospital patients wen it not for
the Health Fair and its
emphasis on preventive care.
"It's nice to put something back
into the community," he say*.
