SI honors Rabbi Marc Wilson
Congregation Shearith Israel
has designated Saturday, April 12,
as Rabbi Marc Wilson Apprecia
tion Sabbath. A special kiddush
following services will be served in
honor of the occasion.
In the five years of his
association with the congregation,
Shearith Israel has grown in
membenhip from 550 to 750
families; seen an increase
in Hebrew School enrollment from
75 to 175 stndents—most of
whom continue to study at the
High School of Jewish Studies;
revitalized a Chevra Kaddisba
group of 30 dedicated people who
are on call to assure the
preparation of the dead for burial,
with dignity and in accordance
with prescribed Jewish observances;
orgenized a ftikkur Cbotim
(visitation of the sick) committee;
built a corps of 140 congregants
who periodically participate in a
Pmpk FOwar/Choteat Sabbath,
during which the rabbi is a
congregant and the congregants
lay leaders of the entire service;
compiled a- Judaic tape library,
and developed a popular summer
retreat or Chavurah, during which
25 families retire to the country for
a weekend of study and fun while
' experiencing a Sabbath of peace
and observance.
This list of achievements, and
more, are all directly attributable
to Rabbi Wilson’s driving Three
and influence. His capacity to view
Judaism with freshness, with joy,
approaching study and practice
each time with an exhilarating
tense of first discovery, and hi*
ability to convey that special
quality to bis congregants makes
Rabbi Wilton a unique spiritual
leader.
