Jacob presents Or VeShalom hosts Nico Castel
Beth
Concert on the Roof
Congregation Beth Jacob will
present a l ag B’Omer “Concert on
the Roof featuring the Atlanta
Community Orchestra under the
direction of John Demos, at 7:30
p m, Sunday, May 4, at the
synagogue
The program will contain
selections by artists such as
Rimski-Korsakov, Khatchatunan
and Shubert. Also on the program
will be "Caprice Serenata”
composed by Beth Jacob member
Emil Weiss.
Wine and cheese will be served
“pops” style.
Chairperson for this event is
Mrs. Melvin Tillem.
Tickets are available from the
synagogue office or at the door for
a $4 donation. Proceeds will
benefit the congregation’s youth
program.

The Jewish Home
appreciates volunteers
The Jewish Home will honor its
volunteers with the annual
appreciation banquet at noon,
Thursday, May 8 at the Home.
President of the volunteer corps,
Irene Becker will present
certificates showing the number of
hours each volunteer has
contributed this past year. Joy
Garson Howard, president of the
Home, will bring greetings and
tributes from the staff.
Ahavath Achim Sisterhood’s
Jewish Home chairwoman.
Barbara Geldbart, will present each
of the residents with a corsage on
Sunday, May II, as part of the
Home’s Mother’s Day festivities.
During the month of May,
bingo games will be sponsored at
the Home by the following
organizations: North Atlanta
ORT, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May
7; Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood,
7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 14,
and Beth Shalom Sisterhood, 7:30
p.m., Wednesday, May 28.

plans installation
The Atlanta Chapter of
American Mizrachi Women will
hold its closing and installation
luncheon at 12:30 p.m., Monday,
May 12, at the home of Mrs.
Edwin Galler, 1666 Silver Hills
Rd , Stone Mountain.
Vida Goldgar, editor and
publisher of The Southern
Israelite, will install the officers for
1980-81.
Mrs. Harry Robkin, president,
will present her annual report.
Mothere-in-lsrael will be honored
by Mrs. Galler, chairwoman.
The Fresh Air Raffle will also
take place. Members should mail
in checks and stubs to chairwoman

Nico Castel, Metropolitan
Opera tenor, will perform
selections from the rituals at the
Friday night services at 8:15 p.m,
May 9, at Congregation Or
VeShalom. For the third
consecutive year, Castel will also
sing a few Ladino and Yiddish
songs at the Oneg Shabbat
following the services.
Nico Castel was born in Lisbon,
Portugal, into a family of
orthodox Sephardic rabbis and
scholars who had traced their
ancestry back to Medieval Castile
(Spain), from which province their
name is derived. Castel was taken
by his parents to Caracas,
Venezuela, where he also began his
musical studies, later to be
continued in the United States,
Italy and Germany. In 1958 he was
selected as first winner of the “Joy In
Singing” competition and since then
his career has spanned the fields of
opera, concerts and recitals of
music of varied styles and
languages, all over the world.
For the past 16 years, he has
officiated as cantor at the
Scarsdale Synagogue in N Y. He is
also a professor on diction in four
foreign languages at New York
University, the Mannes College of
Music and the American Institute
of Musical Studies in Graz,
Austria
Founders’ Dinner
The second annual Founders’
Dinner of the Epstein School will
be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday,
May 14, at the Ahavath Achim
Synagogue.
This event is the major fund
raising event for this seven-year-
old community Jewish day school,
which offers a rich general
curriculum and a full Judaic
studies program.
Besides having a student body of
many native Atlantans and
“transplanted" Americans, the
Epstein School has an inter
national flavor with students from
Canada, South Africa, Israel, Iran
The Atlanta Section, National
Council of Jewish Women will
hold its closing meeting and
installation of officers at 11:30
a m., Monday, May 12 at the home
of Betty Sugarman, 988 Somerset
Drive.
The guest speaker will be Naomi
Wagner, a staff member of the
NCJW Research Institute for
Innovation in Education, Hebrew
University, Jerusalem An Israeli
luncheon prepared by the
members will be served.
The following officers will be
installed: Barbara Klineman,
Charmain Weber, Sandy
Gladstone, Terry Esptein, vice
presidents; Michal Hillman,
recording secretary; Joyce
Smilack, financial secretary;
Nico Castel
Castel has accumulated a vast
repertoire of Jewish music,
liturgical, Yiddish, Israeli, and
especially Ladino. His album
“Sefarad—the Sephardic
Tradition in Ladino Song” has
received high praise in two
continents. Autographed copies of
this album is now available at the
OVS gift shop.
Entertaining Castel during the
week of the annual Metropolitan
Opera tour here in Atlanta will be
Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Benator,
Mr. and Mrs. Morton Grosswald
and Mr. and Mrs. Sol Beton.

for many years.

With today’s challenging
economy and a number of students
who require full or partial
scholarships, tuition and a
supplement from the Atlanta
Jewish Federation do not fully
cover the costs of operating the
school. Therefore the Epstein
School relies on the Founders’
Dinner as an important fund
raising event.
The entire community is invited
to attend the dinner which costs
$ 125 per couple, $85 per person.
