that Americans “could do well to
emulate."
The question that has been
troubling many voters throughout
the country—Anderson’s reported
sponsorship of a Congressional
resolution effectively negating the
separation of church and state—
was the first question from the
audience at the end of Anderson's
prepared remarks. His response
was quick and angry.
Calling a claim that the
resolution would have made
Christianity the official state
religion “not true," Anderson said
he introduced a resolution in 1961
which “I have publicly disavowed
for 15 years” that “acknowledged
the blessings of almighty God and
the Lordship of Jesus Christ.”
However, he said, “The second
operative paragraph of the
resolution said that this in no way
shall be interpreted as the
establishment of an official
ecclesiastical church or religion
and the third paragraph provided
for aq oath that could be
subscribed in support of the
Constitution that would eliminate
the necessity for any individual
offended by those words from
taking an oath swearing to that
particular language.”
Repeating that he had
disavowed that position, “I have
freely said I made a mistake”—
Anderson said that for at least a

decade he has proved his fidelity to
the cause of separation of church
and state. “I have voted against it, I

have spoken against it, I have

idea that we ought to have a

Asked about his position on
settlements on the West Bank,
Anderson separated the issue into
the juridical question and the
practical question of impact on
negotiations. Noting that not only
have 50,000 Arabs been allowed to
return to the West Bank since 1948
and that in a population of more
than a million “we are only talking
about between five and ten
thousand Jewish settlers,
Anderson said, “It is by no means
clear to me that Jordanian claims
to rightful sovereignty over that
territory are as certain as some
people would assert” and that
“you could make a good case that
where (settlements) are clearly
related to security and did not
generally displace private citizens
or property” nonetheless “what we
do not want is to get into a
situation where that becomes ihe
issue that is totally blocking the
Middle East settlement”
Anderson predictably pleased
the mostly Jewish audience with
his strong pro-Israel statements,
but also drew prolonged applause
for his positions on such diverse
issues as:
•Labor—“I am not going to
support the kind of legislation that
denigrates from the free collective
bargaining rights of the workers of
this country.”
•Gay rights—“1 do not favor
discrimination, be it on the basts of
race, be it on the basis of religion,
or be it on the basis of affectional
preference.
Anderson needs approximately
100,000 petition signatures by July
9 to get on the Georgia ballot,
57,000 representing the required
two and a half percent of eligible
voters and the rest for “insurance."
Following Tuesday night’s
gathering, many in the audience,
which had interrupted his remarks
frequently with applause, signed
up to help.
