Inside the Muslim Quran
Theological stumbling block to a Mideast peace

The current political problems
with respect to Israel and her Arab
neighbors are mainly because
Israel has been established as a
Jewish state. If what is
geographically known today as
Israel would instead be termed
Palestine, Western Jordan, Lower
Syria, Southern Lebanon, New
Phoenicia, Northern Nabatea,
Abrahamland, Hebron Heights, or
another “unoffensive" country, the
Muslim world would have no
qualms or objections to the
existence of such a geographical
entity.
The fact that Israel connotes a
Jewish tie with the ancient past and
is used interchangeably with Jew
(in the Qur’an, Beni Isra’il refers
solely to the Jews) rankles and
upsets the Muslims not merely

politically, but also on theological
or religious grounds.
It is the intention here to
underscore the anti-Jewish
sentiment of the author of the
Qur'an in proving that any
"rapprochement” or “peace"
between Arabs and Jews is not in
the spirit of the Qur’an, albeit it
may be politically, economically,
or humanistically expedient.
We Jews should and must
understand that the Qur’an is
believed by every Muslim (no
matter what race, sex, or national
origin) to be the holy word
revealed to the prophet
Muhammad by Allah (God). No
letter, word, or vowel may be
abridged from the current
recension without risking heresy.
Therefore, the religious attitude of
a Muslim toward a Jew or non-
Muslim k necessarily governed by
a prejudice formed in the scripture
which he or she acquired since very
early childhood.
Jewish people cannot naively
hope for a "peaceful co-existence"
between an Arab and Israeli (Jew)

The following references from
the Qur’an ate cited here to
illustrate the attitude of the
Muslim toward the Jew:
a) "Some of those who are Jews
change words from their context
and say. ‘We hearbut disobey*;
distorting with their tongues end
slendering religion. If they had
said: ‘We hear and we obey listen
and look at us,' it would have been
better for them, and more upright
But Allah has cursed them for their
disbelief so they believe not, save a
few." ; v
(Surah 4:46)
b) "O Messenger! Let not them
grieve you, they who vie with one
another, in the race to disbelieve—
who say ‘We believe,’ but in their
hearts they believe not; end of the
Jews: they ere listeners to
falsehood, changing words
from their context....Those are
they for whom the will of Allah is
that He cleanse not their hearts.
Their lot in this world will be
ignominy, and In the Hereafter an
awful doom.”
\ ' •, 1 (Surah 5:41)
c) "The Jews say: ‘Allah's hand is
fettered.’ Their hands tat fettered
and they are accursed for saying
unto you from your Lord Is certain
to Increase the eannunecy and
disbelief of many of them, and we
have cast among them enmity and
haired until the Day of
Resurrection. As often as they
light a fire for war, Allah
extinguishes it. Their effort is only
for corruption in the land, tmd
Allah does not look with favor
upon corrupters.”
(Surah 5.-64)
d) "And we decreed for the
Children of Israel in the scripture:
'You will certainly work
corruption in the earth twice, and
you will become great tyrmts
(Surah 17.-4)
e) "Say, O Muhammad: *0 You
who are Jews! If you claim that
you are favored by Allah apart
from all mankind, then long for
death!' But they will never long for
it because of all that their own
hands have done previously, and
Allah is aware of evildoers."
(Surah 62.-6-7)
The above references, which
obviously include vituperative
and vitriolic utterances against the
Jews (in the fashion of passages
from the writings of the early
Church fathers) were purported to
be "revealed" to Muhammad after
his unsuccessful attempts to
convert wealthy and influential
Jews of Yathrib (presently el-
