Frank Gutay has recently been named chief executive officer of MED-data, Inc., an Atlanta-based medically-oriented computer software company. Robert I. Lowenberg, M.D.,has been moved up to president and chairman of the board, to head international operations. * * * Mrs. Rae Alice Cohen of Atlanta has been appointed to serve as local Women’s League for Conservative Judaism coordinator for Celebration 33, the largest theater benefit in history. Mrs. Cohen will organize Women's League’s efforts locally for the celebration in honor of Israel's 33rd anniversary, to take place May 11. Organizations that support schools in Israel will join forces in a cooperative effort to sell tickets, at $100 each, for the party which will occur simultaneously in some 1,000 theaters in the United States, Canada, and overseas. The world premiere of the motion picture The Chosen, based on the best-selling novel by Chaim Potok will be the feature of the evening The Israeli government has designated Celebration 33 as an official event. A.J. Cohen, president of Savannah's Lady Jane Shop was recently named .Independent Retailer oftheYearfor 1981 by the National Retailer Merchants Association. (NRMA). Cohen received the award at a luncheon at the 70th annual convention of NRMA held at the New York City Hilton HoteL He is on the association's executive committee and for the past three years he has served as chairman of its independent stores board of directors. Special guests attending the presentation luncheon included his wife, Kelly; daughter, Julia; sons Sanford, and George, all of Savannah and son, A.J. Ill of Denver, Colo.; mother, Mrs. A.J. Cohen, Sr. and sister, Mrs. Milton (Valerie) Kassel of Atlanta. * * * Sol Levy of Rockville, Md., was awarded a service plaque by the Surgeon General of the United States for his service in U.S. Public Health. His is the son of Elie and Viola Levy of Atlanta. * * * Dr. Michael A. Baer has been named the new dean of the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences. Baer, 38, a native of Atlanta, is the son of Beulah and Kurt Baer. He has been on the political science faculty of the university since 1 °68. Since 1977 he has been chairman of the department. Baer earned his B.A. in chemistry and political science at Emory University in Atlanta and his M.A. and PhD. at the University of Oregon. He is married to the former Charlotte Glazer of Atlanta and they have two children. Mrs. Baer, daughter of Dr. and Mrs Joe Glazer of Atlanta, is assistant director of the Kentucky Humanities Council. Newcomers SBBSBaBB Karen and Irving (B.B.) Chemoff of Columbus, Ohio, announce the birth of a son, Jeffrey Ryan, on Jan. 28. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jake Smith of Atlanta and Mrs. Benjamin Chemoff of High Point, N.C. * * * Dr. and Mrs; Robert M. Eisenband of Dunwoody announce the birth of their fourth daughter, Julie Elizabeth, on E)ec. 22. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Sol Eisenband of Atlanta and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Barnum of New Orleans. Julie was given the Hebrew name, Yaacova Elisheva. Dr. Marvin C. Goldstein was presented the distinguished 40th Anniversary Award in recognition of his dedicated service to America's Armed Forces and their families on the occasiop of the 40th anniversary of the U.S.O. of Atlanta. Dr.‘ Goldstein was presented a special Norman Rockwell Citation. The award was presented at a special meeting attended by the commanding generals of the Army Command at Fort McPherson as well as the Marine Corp. Ro*enthall of C harleston, S.C., will receive the degree of Doctor of Divinity from the Hebrew Union College —Jewish Institute of Religion, from Dr. Alfred Gottscbalk, HUC president, at Founders Day Exercises at the Cincinnati division of the school on March 11. Rabbi RosenthaU, a native of Kenton, Ohio, ti marking the 25th anniversary of his ordination by Hebrew Union College. He has been with his current congregation since 1976. He previously served various congregations in New York City and for ten years was executive director of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. He coordinated congregational activities in 24 countries and administered the programs, publications and international conferences of the World Union. Rabbi Rosenthall's special interest is in Jewish art. He has lectured on that subject, serves on the Collections Committee of the Gibbes Art Gallery in Charleston and is vice president of the Associated Jewish Museums.
