makes his living in sales. A job in
which communicating is most
important. Therefore, a stuttering
problem that he had was a real
handicap
“I had more of a hesitation than
a stutter," l iebman said. “I would
lust get stuck in the middle of a
sentence. There was never any
specific word that set me off,” he
added.
That was months ago. Today
Liebman’s stuttering affliction is
almost nonexistent He credits his
recovery to a workshop conducted
in Atlanta by Dr Martin
Schwartz, author of the book,
"Stuttering Solved.”
Stuttering, an affliction usually
not associated with handicaps, is
often taken lightly, according to
Schwartz who visited The
Southern Israelite recently to
discuss his book and his methods.
What makes his book different
from treatments that date back as
far as stuttering does, is that
Schwartz has found that teachers
and speech pathologists have been
tackling the wrong problem.
“In the past we dealt with the
problem by looking at only the
stress factor," Schwartz said.
“Tension antf stress, which
definitely play into the problem of
stuttering, was what educators
were trying to solve. But they were
missing the crucial point.
“When a person has enough

stress, their tension is focused on
the vocal cords, making them lock
up,” Schwartz, who is from New
York, explained
A vocal cord spasm finds the
individual suddenly unable to
speak or complete a thought. They
begin to struggle, trying to release
the lock, thus— even more tension
“It was a revolution when we
realized that rather than treating
stuttering, we needed to treat the
locked cords,” Schwartz said
Schwartz’s air flow technique is
used by controlling breathing,
exhaling a gentle flow of air
through the mouth and having the
air flow directly intothe first word
Schwartz reports a 94.1 percent
success rate.
Liebman, who is definitely one
of Schwartz’s success stories,
read about the method in an
Atlanta paper and attended one of
the four yearly workshops that are
held here. “It was easier for me to
learn the methods because 1 didn’t
have a major problem But I did
notice after attending other
workshops, that others with more
serious cases were improving.
“The method works for me
although it’s still always on my
mind to try and relax and practice
the breathing. I tell myself to slow
down and say what I’m
thinking not let my mind get
ahead of my mouth,” he said
Stuttering is a problem that
affects all kinds of people in all
parts of the world There is no
specific group that has a higher
stuttering rate it’s a truly
unprejudicial handicap However,
Schwartz says that there is a
slightly higher rate of recovery
among Jewish people than others.
Not because more Jews stutter,
but because “there’s a greater
tradition for maximizing one’s
potential among the Jewish
people, Schwartz said. “They are
quicker to seek aid,” he added
The benefits of his method
sometimes even surprise Schwartz..
He still gets a smile remembering
the time that a Jewish father from
France sought his aid.
“His daughter was 18 and
according to her father, was
already over the marriageable age
Her IQ was 14 points above
normal, and she was attractive, but
she stuttered." After treating her.
Schwartz_ received notice eight
months later that the young
woman had married and was living
in Israel Mission accomplished.
