Mubarak goes to Washington
to seek ‘a Palestinian entity’
by Joseph PolaltofT
TSI* Washington correspondent
WASHINGTON — Egyptian
President Hosm Mubarak
emphasized Wednesday directly to
President Reagan that he seeks
establishment of “a Palestinian
entity” and wants Reagan’s help in
founding it
Without mentioning Camp
David in his greeting to Reagan, in
their first meeting at the White
House, the successor to the slain
Anwar Sadat declared that “the
right of self determination” to the
Palestinians “cannot be denied.”
He told Reagan “that to make it a
living reality to Palestinians, we
need your help and understanding."
Mubarak's words continued the
line he’s been taking, away from
the provisions of Camp David and
toward language such as “self-
determination," which is not in the
Camp David agreement. “Self-
determination” is generally seen as
a code word for a movement
toward a Palestinian state.
Mubarak
Later, Reagan’s senior adminis
tration officials said that both
presidents, in their private session
after the opening public remarks,
reaffirmed Camp David and their
“mutual recommitment” to the
agreement and the autonomy talks
as "the only reliable vehicle for
addressing the Palestinian
problem.”
“We certainly have agreed we
will mutually engage, along with
Israel, to accelerate the process,”
one of the officials said on
background to a crowded news
conference. Ihe two presidents
were to meet again Thursday.
Without naming the Soviet
Union, Reagan, in his greeting to
Mubarak, said that Poland and
Afghanistan “now suffocate under
the oppressive whim of this fearful
master,” and said that the “same
power” is encouraging “hatred and
conflict” in the Middle East. The
president said “the U S. stands
firmly with Egypt and other
Mideastern nations concerned
with regional security,” but
Mubarak made no mention of the
Soviet Union, which is against
sending personnel to Egypt, nor
the "strategic consensus" which
the U S. is seeking to establish in
the Middle East.

Holocaust memorial for N. Y.
NEW YORK (JTA) City officials were reminded that “New
York City today numbers among its citizens more survivors of the
Holocaust than any other city in the world," but still lacks a proper
memorial to the victims 40 years after those events.
The need fora New York City Holocaust Memorial Center that,
would also serve archival and research functions, was stressed by
Richard Berman, the New York State housing commissioner, and
others who appeared at a hearing of the Mayor’s Holocaust
Memorial Task Force here Monday. Berman appeared in his
capacity as chairman ol the Jewish Community
Relations Council ol New York’s Holocaust Commission
The Holocaust Memorial Task force was established by
Mayor Edward Koch last July to determine what kind ol memorial
should be created, where it should be located and what it would
