governor’s responsibility to work
for justice" and that the matter
should be called to the attention of
the Pardon and Paroles Board. “It
is never too late for justice to be
done." he said
Noting that John Slaton was the
one governor who looked closely
at the case and commuted Frank’s
sentence because of doubts,
candidate Jack Watson called the
lynching of Leo Frank “one of the
most shameful pages in Georgia
history."
Bob Bell, pointing out that he
was not a lawyer, said the case
needs to be looked into but he was
not certain at this point exactly
what action is appropriate.
Buckner Melton, saying
“Alonzo Mann is probably telling
the truth," said that “it is imperative
that there be an investigation" to
“right the wrong by a posthumous
pardon."
Only Nick Belluso expressed the
view that that chapter in Georgia
history is better left alone.
Moderator Nevins pointed out that,
while the governor of Georgia
cannot issue a pardon, he does
have considerable influence.
Nevins encouraged people to write
the governor.
Meanwhile, a legal committee,
formed under the cooperative
efforts of the Atlanta Jewish
Federation, the American Jewish
Committee and the Anti-
Defamation League, was
scheduled to meet at press time
Under the chairmanship of Dale
Schwartz, the lawyers committee is
exploring what means can betaken
to exonerate Frank. Charles
Wittenstein, staff director for the
committee, said that in almost
every other state in the union the
governor could issue a pardon but
the situation is complicated by the
fact that, by Georgia law, the
governor cannot issue a pardon.
However, the committee is
prepared to investigate all avenues
Text of Leo Frank’s letter
State Farm
Milledgeville, Ga.
August 16, 1915
Dear Milton:
Your welcome letter of Aug.
11th, mailed on the 13th, duly
reached me. I was so glad to hear
from yoG and to learn that you and
yours are well. Dear Lucille
(Frank’s wife) is well and 1 am
progressing right along. I am
sitting up in a chair and writing this
on a table.
As I am writing you today in lieu
of Herbert, please phone him that
you heard from me.
I am gaining each day in
strength and my general health is
good. Slept well last night and ate with
appetite today. The latter is a
chronic condition with me. The
Drs. dressed the wound this a.m.
and were pleased with the progress
(Frank’s throat had been cut by a
fellow prisoner shortly before]. It
is all healed but one little place.
This will be healed too in a few
days. I can now walk better than a
few days since, but 1 am not
rushing this. My voice is greatly
improved though somewhat husky
and weak
When you come down, don’t
have too many in the party, three
at the most, i.e. you and two
others. 1 rather look for Herbert
this week.
When you fail to hear directly
from me. call Herbert or Alex
Marcus. They hear directly or
indirectly from me each day. I
write Mrs. iSelig or her family,
Herbert or his family, and my
folks in N Y. every day for the
present.
Would suggest that you send
Prof. Munsterberg a copy of
Benson’s five arguments and
Connolly’s Truth etc. He may
eventually be of some service.
How do recent events in Atlanta
appeal to you. 1 keep up with
things in the Journal.
Remember me to inquiring
friends
Love and greetings to you and
yours from us both.
Yours,
Leo M. Frank
