Rough, tough and Jewish
by Joseph Polakoff
WASHINGTON—Out in
California, in editions two weeks
apart, horses and their riders
galloped into the news. I'he San
Francisco Jewish Bulletin
headlined “Jewish Jockey
Winning Fame at Golden Gate
Race Track” while in Los Angeles
the Heritage-Southwest Jewish
Press bannered “Rodeo Family is
Rough, Tough and Jewish.”
I he Jewish Bulletin’s managing
editor, Geoffrey Fisher, reported
that at age 30, Danny Winick has
accumulated winnings that total
nearly SI million since he began
riding 10 years ago.
“During the past six months he
has been one of the hottest horse
pilots in Northern California,”
Fisher reported. “Currently riding
at the Golden Gate Fields meeting,
Winick reached the winner’s circle
seven times in his first 20 races to
give him the highest winning
percentage of the jockeys
competing at the track.”
“I asked Danny the question 1
reserve for interviews with men of
the Jewish faith who are working
at uncommon occupations—such
as the Jewish goaltender who
played for the late San Francisco
Fogs and the Jewish elephant
handler at the San Francisco
Zoo—how did he happen to get
into such a profession?”
Danny replied: “My dad had a
close friend who was a jockey.
When 1 graduated from high
school in Los Angeles, he
introduced me to a trainer who got
started learning about horses at
Santa Anita. My dad told me that
considering my small size I
could make a lot of money if I
became a jockey."
Danny, who tips the scales at
just a pinch over 100 pounds, had
never been on a horse before he
started working in the stable area
of Santa Anita. A year later, a
trainer told him it was time for him
to get on a horse and learn to ride
So, in his very first race in 1972 at
age 20, at Pleasanton Fair Ground,
he rode and finished third. Danny’s
wife. Debbie, is the daughter of a
horse trainer. The Winicks plan to
own and train horses in their
future.
It’s different in Los Angeles.
There, Heritage editor Dan Brin
received a letter from Marcia
gchlesinger, a former professional
model It was datelined "Hebrew
Hacienda” which is another name
for the Diamond S Ranch in
Fullerton, Calif., which she and her
husband, Ed, own along with a
jewelry store in J ustin, Calif.
“My Shtetl California,” Ms.
Schlesinger’s letter begins, “raised
the questions: who ever heard of a
Jewish cowboy or cowgirl?” She
proceeded to point out that the
Schlesingers’ daughter, Lynn, 22
years old, who is studying to
become a lawyer, rides in
professional rodeos and their son,
Jeff, 19, who plans to become a
fourth generation jeweler in his
family, does steer riding with
championship honors.
One of the photos that
accompanied the letter shows Lynn
circling the barrels, just like it is in
the western movies. In a recent 1
rodeo she beat out 67 other
cowgirls to win the competition.
Another photo shows Jeff, at age
13, winning the California State
Championship in the Junior
Rodeo Steer Riding competition.
Marcia and Ed Schlesinger appear
in another photo with a nephew,
Matthew Cobrink, during his Bar
Mitzva Matthew was reported as
the youngest rider in the family.
Lynn started riding at age 6, and
began professionally when 11 at
Rawhide Ranch in Bonsall, Calif. She
has done all types of riding and
decided to go into barrel racing,
which is the only girls’ event in pro
rodeo. She rides for her college—
Cal Poly in Pomona. Jeff, who
attends Paris College in Paris,
Texas, helps support himself His
mother reports that “when in the
night spots of Dallas or Paris,
those them thar Texans say: ‘Hey,
California surfer, why don’t you
try this here machine?’ Well, they
don’t realize that Jeff is an
excellent rider...he trick rides,
vaults and was taught at Rawhide
Ranch on one of those buckin’
machines. Needless to say, Jeff has
won some Texas money. He
reckons.”

Why are women not allowed to
act as witness in formal Jewish law
court process?
It is to be noted that, according
to Jewish law, kings are likewise
not allowed to bear official
testimony in a Jewish court of law.
This indicates that credibility is not
involved in this prohibition. As a
matter of fact, it is well established
that, as a rule, women enjoy full
credibility. When it becomes a
matter of direct accusation, only
official witnessing is acceptable and
women are not to be involved.
Some claim that this is done so as
to free women of compulsion in
offering testimony. Others claim
that public testimony might
threaten women’s role in private
life. Another explanation is that
official testimony might subject
women to the indignity of cross-
examination in open court.
