O. Sigal of Macon was recently
awarded the 1981 American
Heart Association Distinguished
Achievement Award, the
highest award the national
association gives. The
presentation was made at the
association’s regional meeting
in Savannah
He also was given the Citizen
of the Year Award by the Bibb
County Medical Association
for his work with the Medical
Center of Central Georgia
Sigal’s contributions to his
community over the years have
been numerous. He is a former
member of the President’s
Council at Mercer University, a
trustee of Macon Junior
College, past president of the
Middle Georgia United Service
Organization, past president of
the Middle Georgia Federation
of Jewish Charities, past
president of the Boys Club of
Macon, past president of the
Georgia Federation of B’nai
B’rith l odges, past director of
the Southeast Regional Board
of the Anti-Defamalion league,
past director of the United
Givers Fund, past forejnan of
the Bibb County Grand Jury
and member of the Bibb
County Jurors Association,
past director of the Bibb
County Family Service
•Agency, past board member of
the Georgia Regional Medical
Program, and past chairman of
Pack II, Boy Scouts of
America.
He is also a past president of

In 1975, Sigal received the
Algernon Sydney Sullivan
Award, which is given annually
at Mercer University to a civic
leader for distinguished public
service. He received this award
for his work with the heart
association, with Mercer, and
his other community activities.
Of his community work, he
said, “Everybody is supposed to
improve the community. It's a
question of paying your dues. If
you can leave your place better
than you found it. you have
done your job...but I couldn’t
have done it without Claire
supporting me . Jewish people
have always had a close family
relationship."
Sigal, born in Providence,
R.I., is married to the fortner
Claire Bernard of Atlanta.
After World War II. they
moved to Macon, w here he had
been stationed with the Navy.
They have three children and
one granddaughter.
The Bat Mitzva of Stacey
Joseph of Atlanta will take
place at 9 a m. Saturday, May
I, at Ahavath Achim
Synagogue. A congregational
kiddush will follow. Stacey is
the daughter of Eileen and
Larry Joseph She is the
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Israel.
Mrs. Bess Taffel of Atlanta will
be honored by the Veterans
Administration at its annual
Volunteer Recognition Ceremony
on April 29, for her contribution of
13,751 hours of service as a
volunteer at the hospital

IDberman, medical director of the
West Paces Ferry Hospital Adult

to a major article published in the
current issue of Harper’s Bazaar
entitled, “Acne Report '82: New
Treatments That Work.”

The annual Trustee of the Year
Award of the LeoN. Levi National
Arthritis Hospital was shared by
four men this year They are David
M. Rlumberg of Knoxville, Tenn.,
Dr. Joe Cahn of New Orleans, I .a.,
and Bernard S. Rephan and
Richard V. Story, both of Hot
Springs. Ark.
The honorees were each
presented with a silver cup at the
hospital’s annual meeting, which'
\^s held recently in Hot Springs
Joshua Blumenfeld, son of Dr. Warren and Esther Blumenfeld
of Atlanta, receives his Ner Tamid medal at a recent presentation
ceremony held at the Temple, on Scout Shabbat. Pictured at right

The Bar Mitzva of Andrew
Scott Abend of Atlanta will take

Joan Weinberger of Sandy
Springs was recently named 1981
Central Region Salesperson of the
Year for Philips Information
Systems.
The award was presented at a
banquet in Cancun, Mexico,
where Mrs. Weinberger and her
husband were guests of the
company.
The Weinbergers are members
of Temple Emanu-El.
Edward Finkel of Atlanta, a
teacher of physics and
advanced chemistry at
Henderson High School, was
recently published in
Curriculum Review, a national
journal of education trends and
materials, with an article
entitled “The Computer:
Myths and Promises."
Finkel has worked as a
programmer and analyst in
computer technology and
education. He has taught
computer science in this
country and in Israel.
Recently named a STAR
teacher, he is the recipient of
numerous local and national
honors in science and education
He is currently completing
doctoral studies at Georgia
State University.
