Federation reaches out to Jews
in Cobb County, Roswell areas
A recent community forum for
all Jewish residents of Cobb
County and Roswell/Alpharetta
provided the opportunity lor those
in attendence to express their
opinions about the quality of
Jewish life they wished to have in
their communities.
The forum, sponsored by the
Atlanta Jewish Federation’s
Outreach Committee, represented
one component of a needs-
assessment process that
Federation has begun in areas
where there has been a rapid
growth in the Jewish population.
The most frequently mentioned
needs were recreational activities
for youth and adults, day care and
after school care. Other needs
expressed by residents were
Hebrew day schools, adult
education courses and social
groups for senior citizens.
The forum was led by Dr.
Stephen King, who is chairman of
the Federation-Cobb County
Out reach Committee. The
committee is made up ol
representatives from all Jewish
organizations in the area. Dr King
emphasized that the gathering of
information from residents is an
ongoing process. Residents’ input
is most important to any plan for
expansion of programs and
services.
There are, at present, a number
of Federation-sponsored services
accessible to Cobb County
residents: the Bureau of Jewish
Education (873-1248) is available
to teachers for consultation about
religious education; the Jewish Family
and Children’s Bureau (873-2277)
has an outreach worker whose
counseling services are available at
three north suburban synagogues
and Zaban Park; the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center (875-7881)
plans to open a nursery school at
Congregation Etz Chaim in the fall
and hopes to be able to provide
some recreational programs for
children and adults soon after that;
the Jewish Vocational Service
(876-5872) is prepared to offer
testing and counseling services for
high school students, as well as
career counseling for adults, and
B’nai B’rith Youth Organization
(873-0343) has a BBC chapter
from that area
In addition. Federation has
formed a Shalom Atlanta
Welcome Wagon committee to
greet new Jewish residents of Cobb
County, and energy conservation
workshops, already held in the
winter, will be rescheduled for
fall 1982
Representatives of Jewish
agencies who spoke to the forum
include: Debbie Beards and Joy
Howard for the Jewish Home;
Leonard Cohen from the Jewish
Family and Children’s Bureau;
Mark Fisher from the Jewish
Vocational Service, Barrie Segall
of the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center; Arnie Sohinki representing
BBYO; and Zvi Shapiro and Doris
Goldstein from the Epstein
School.
The Federation was represented
by Max Rittenbaum, president, Al
Beerman, co-chairman of the
Community Planning Committee;
David Sarnat, executive director;
Max Kleinman, assistant
direclor/planning; and Noah

A questionnaire about needs for
programs and services was
distributed at the forum and copies
of that questionnaire have been
mailed to the community.
Information gathered from these
will be invaluable in the planning
process.
Anyone who wishes to become a
part of the outreach effort; anyone
new to the area; anyone who
wishes information about its
programs, or who needs a
questionnaire, is asked to call

The Charleston Jewish
Federation, along with the city of
Charleston, had one of its finest
hours on Tuesday, March 30.
It all began when Steven R.
Wendell, executive director of the
Charleston Jewish Federation,
was in Atlanta last fall to attend
the United Jewish Appeal
Regional Conference. Rep Tom
Lantos (D-Calif.), in his speech at
the conference, called for every
Jewish community in the country

to do something to honor Raoul
Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat
who personally rescued many
Hungarian Jews who otherwise
would have been exterminated by
the Germans. Despite Russian
claims that he is dead, there is
evidence to indicate he is alive in a
Soviet prison.
On his return to Charleston,
Wendell contacted Steve Baker, a
local Jewish city councilman. He
asked him about the possibility of
renaming a street after
Wallenberg. Baker was very
interested, although he didn’t have’
the slightest idea who Raoul
Wallenberg was, at the time.
After some investigation, the
councilman felt that he could ask
some of his friends in the city
council about a name change. The
two men decided to “go for broke”
and ask that Millbrook Drive, a
busy through street, and the street
where the Jewish Community
Center and the Federation offices
were located, be changed to Raoul
Wallenberg Boulevard
After the usual stumbling blocks
that accompany projects such as
this one, and some that were not so
usual, and with the help of County
Administrator Steven Steinert. the
street-naming change was approved
At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March
30, Charleston’s mayor, the
chairman of County Council, the
Swedish consul from Savannah,
two Swedish Americans and a host
of other dignitaries, politicians and
citizens joined in the ceremony.
Also in attendance was
Congressman Lantos’ wife
Annette, who made a powerful
presentation on the heroic deeds of
Wallenberg. The congressman
flew to Charleston from
Washington that evening to
address the group.
It was indeed one of the
community’s finest hours.
