Service Guild
Not just another gift shop
by Kamhi Jo Eaton
There is a place that Jewish
Home and lower residents can go
to get warm words and
conversation along with just about
any miscellaneous item—without
leaving the property.
The Jewish Home’s Service
Guild Shop is much more than just
a gift shop—it’s an institution!
The Service Guild, begun 46
years ago, has maintained its
original 1936 goal, to be active and
contribute to the community.
According to Arlene l.evy, one
of the founders and first president
of the group, 13 women founded
the guild. “We contacted different
agencies, like the Family Welfare
Center, and we offered to drive
workers and clients to their
destinations. We didn’t only cater
to the Jewish agencies; in fact,
many had no Jewish connections
at all,” Mrs. levy reflected during
a recent telephone interview. “We
vowed that we would be
be active in our community and we
have, to this very day, remained
active," she added.
The Service Guild began its first
gift shop at Grady Hospital With
the money saved up over a period
of time, the group was able to
financially initiate a psychiatric
ward for the hospital.
Now, their gift shop is located
on the lobby level of the Jewish
Home Mrs. Herbert (Jean)Cohen
is the general manager, and her
competent staff includes Hannah-

sundries buyer; Sylvia Brown,
greeting card buyer; and Fannie
Cohen, in-house resident manager.
The shop has become more than
just a store to those who use it
most. Besides the fact that
practically any item imaginable
can be found at low prices, the
residents, many of whom drop by
every day, often leave with smiles
instead of purchases. And that
suits Jean Cohen just fine.
“This gift shop is for the needs of
the residents—whatever the need
is. We will always come through
for them," she said with a warm
smile.
While this reporter was visiting
the shop early one morning before
opening hours, two women,
Sophia Weiss and Anna Bernstein,
peeked in just to see if anything
new was on hand. Hearingthat the
Service Guild Shop was the focal

point of a TSI story, they were
eager to express their feelings
about the gift shop.
“1 go in everyday,” Mrs.
Bernstein said with a twinkle in her
eye. “They have so many beautiful
things to look at." Then she added,
"I usually don’t buy, I just like to
see everyone and talk."
Mrs. Weiss was in eager
agreement with her friend. “What
they sell is very handy and the
volunteers are wonderful to us. If
we need something, but can’t get
out to get it. Jean (Cohen) always
comes to the rescue," she said
Appropriately, funds raised are
returned to help the Home.
Periodically, the Service Guild asks
Deborah Beards, executive
director of the Jewish Home, what
is needed And Ms. Beards has a
never-ending list.
Last month, the shop donated a
most necessary item, cardiac
pulmonary resuscitation equipment...
a gift worth over $2,500 that the
Home budget simply didn’t allow
for.
Because of the donation,
the director of statf development,
Cathy Boyles, has already begun
intensive CPR classes for the staff,
later, she plans to expand the
CPR course to the community-at-
large, after “the Home and Tower
staffs are well-versed on the life
saving methods,” she says.
Ms. Beards finds the Service
Guild to be invaluable and points
to the equipment in the physical
therapy department as an
example.

for taking fluid out of swollen
veins, are some of the expensive
and complex equipment that are most
essential, according to Carol Wolf,
head of the physical therapy
department “The gift shop has
been a great asset to the Home,"
she said.
And if the gift shop hasn’t
already done enough good—they
even went one step further and
encouraged competition from
their customers. Making it a point
to never sell handmade goods, the
guild encouraged and initiated the
residents to open a hobby shop
which is open daily, selling only
crafts made by Tower and Home
residents.
The Service Guild takes time,
once a year, from their many
activities to thank and honor each
other and to elect officers at a
meeting and luncheon. But even
then, they are not thinking of
themselves. On that same day, they
will hold a bazaar in conjunction
with their meeting, in hopes that
they will be able to raise even more
money.
The bazaar will be held Tuesday,
May 4, at the Standard Club, from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The community is
invited to drop by and check out
the bargains.
