WASHINGTON — President
Reagan, addressing a select
audience of prominent Jewish and
non-Jewish Americans at the
White House for observance of the
"Day of Remembrance" of the
Nazi Holocaust, praised Israel’s
“magnificent act of faith” in giving
up the Sinai “for the sake of
peace.”
While six candles, lighted by
survivors of the Holocaust and
their children, burned in the East
Room of the White House in
memory of six million Jews who
died in the Nazi terror, the
president spoke of the
contributions the victims could
have made to the world and then
spoke of Israel returning the final
portion of the Sinai to Egypt on
April 25.
“We can only hope that the
return of the Sinai will be
recognized for what it is—a
magnificent act of faith by Israel
for the sake of peace," the
president said. “It is a noble
expression by the people who
suffered so much. The United
States is grateful for this step
which reinforces our firm
commitment to Israel's security.
“Today we are reminded," the
president said, “we must be
sensitive to a people whose country
was born from the ashes of the
Holocaust—a country that rightly
never takes' its security or its
survival for granted. With this in
mind, all peace-loving people
should applaud Israel—and
Egypt—for what they have done."
His listeners, who came from all
parts of America to mark the two-
part program that included a
solemn ceremony at the rotunda in
the Capitol to mark the U.S.
official remembrance, gave the
president prolonged applause. Eli
Wiesel, chairman of the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Council
which arranged the program,
declared, “We are profoundly
moved” by the president’s words.
The Atlanta Boy Choir and
Ahavath Achim’s Cantor Isaac
Goodfriend were participants
during the ceremony.
The president’s address
preceded a gathering of Jewish
leaders at Adas Israel Congregation
later in the day that culminated
meetings held in the past three
weeks in nine cities to help
emphasize to the media and the
public-at-large Israel’s sacrifices
by its return of the Sinai.
The meetings were held in
Miami, Atlanta, Baltimore,
Boston, New York, Chicago, Los
Angeles, San Francisco and
Cleveland. Shortly before the
ceremonies at the rotunda and the
White House, the head of the
National Conference of Major
Jewish American Organizations,
Howard Squadron, told newsmen
that Israel's return of the Sinai
does not mean it was “simply a
treaty obligation” with Egypt for
the abandonment of infrastructure
costing Israel $17.5 billion but “an
enormous risk for peace.” He
spoke of the “terrible trauma" in
evacuation of the town of Yamit
and emphasized: “This is not a
casual act; this should be treated as
a remarkable act of courage for
peace " Squadron pointed out that
“it is time to recognize Israel is
consistently blamed and
criticized,” when the responsibility
for the circumstances in the Arab-
Israeli situation rest with other
nations that are continually
refusing to deal with Israel. He said
that the Reagan administration
has indicated “unwillingness” to
deal with the Arab world “as if it is
not the responsible party.”
Forecasting intense pressure in
Israel after April 25, Squadron
said that the Saudi Arabian eight-
point plan that “makes demands

on Israel without the promise of
peace” comes from a “nation that
has no border with Israel” but has
criticized Egypt for allegedly not
supporting the Palestinians and
refuses to make peace with Israel
that “it could do with the stroke of
a pen.”
Squadron said that the U.S.
arms supply for Jordan to get U.S.
presenoe there and influence for
“moderate behavior” in Jordan is
“doomed to failure" because of the
Islamic “obsessive hostility” to
Western Christian values in which
“Israel is seen quite correctly, if
ironically, as a part.”
Squadron said there is “deep
concern” in Israel as to the next
step in this situation. “If Israel
takes a pre-emptive action in
l^banon it is because the United
States has not provided support to
Israel," he said. He said he is “not
impressed” with the view that as a
result of the U.S. influence with
“moderate Arabs” there will be
peace in 10 years.”
Squadron disclosed that the
Conference of Presidents will place
an advertisement in the New York
Times “Week in Review" section
Sunday, April 25, saluting Israelis
for “betting their lives on peace."
