but, instead, “a pluralistic ethnic
conglomeration.” Statistics prove
otherwise, he said. “Ethnicity is
slowly disappearing,” he told his
colleagues, and when it does, “the
only thing which can make it
possible for Jews to survive as Jews
is Jewish religious life."
Citing studies which indicate the
decline in Jewish population, the
ICJ sees the key to Jewish survival
as a relevant religion “which takes
account of new economic,
political, cultural and technological
conditions—in other words,
Polydoxy,” Rabbi Reines said.
In his keynote address, which
was the sermon for Friday evening
services at the Temple, Rabbi
Reines said Polydoxy evolved
from the dynamic view of Judaism
which “maintains that fundamental
changes have appeared continuously
in the religious history of the Jews,
and that there have been many
‘Judaisms’ since the Patriarchal
Period in which Abraham
appears."
Static Judaism, he said,
“believes that no fum^flental
changes have ever otfclfred" and
that “there has been only one
Judaism since Abraham and only
one Judaism is legitimately
possible.”
Reines compared the dynamic
process to a “human family which
reproduces, regenerates and
revitalizes itself." In his analogy,
he stressed that in Jewish history
there has been a series of Judaisms,
and, as in the case of human
offspring, “each child is
authentically the product of its
parents and all must learn to
accept each other’s existence."
While its adherents don’t expect
Orthodox Judaism to accept the
polydoxian philosophy, they do
see it as consistent with Reform
Judaism and other liberal
branches.
One of its strengths, according
to Reines, is that Polydoxy
encompasses Jews who have felt
left out, such as the child of a
Jewish father and non-Jewish
mother. It is ironic, he noted, that
“people whom the Nazis would
have said are Jews- and would

Returning to Jewish survival,
