Judaism for failing to deal with a
broad range of social action issues.
He also urged Conservative rabbis
to mobilize in opposition to the
Moral Majority and particularly
Sen Jesse Helms (R-N.C), who he
charged was trying to undermine
the authority of the Supreme
Court on such issues as busing,
abortion and public school prayer.
Cohen, of Anshe Emet
Synagogue in Chicago, speaking at
the 82nd annual convention of the
Conservative rabbinical group,
declared that the 1,200
Conservative rabbis it represents

WASHINGTON- With Egypt
back to its pre-1967 lines in the
Sinai, questions raised here are
how and when a new quasi-official
campaign will be launched with the
full panoply of major media
support to goad President Reagan
into demanding that Israel make
concessions that would compress it
further toward its old borders.
“Realism” and "New Era" have
become slogans for action to
suppress Israeli influence in
southern Lebanon, rescind
control over the Golan Heights to
Syria, and erase Jewish
settlements—a la Yamit—in
Judaea, Samaria and Gaza, along
with abandonment of East
people and others to fight these
groups who are threatening the
power of the highest judicial
authority in our nation."
He noted in that connection that
Helms and his colleagues and the
Moral Majority among others
were trying to "limit the
jurisdiction of the Supreme Court
by taking cases relating to these
issues out of their hands and
putting them in the state courts
where more favorable decisions,
from their point of view, would be
attained."
Failing that. Helms and these
groups are seeking a Constitutional
amendment. “They are prepared to
follow a variety of tactics to
achieve their goals even if they
change the Constitution without
amending it,” he said.
Cohen also took issue with
affiliates in the Conservative
movement who “have been
too quiet on the entire question of
social action. The budgets we
allocate for social action are
extremely small,” he said. “We do
so because too many of our Jews
do not wish to get involved . We
are zealous in dealing with such
problems as Israel and Soviet
Jews, but in the main we have been
basically quiescent on other
matters,” he said.

Jerusalem, for “peace.”
Following the Sinai withdrawal,
Arab opinion spoke of that
episode as meaning improvements
in achieving Arab “rights,” while
Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak, speaking of peace in the
Camp David process, suggested to
Arab states that they can get a
settlement like Egypt did—a
possible suggestion the “occupied"
areas can be taken by an offering of
negotiation with Israel.
Speculation is that in June,
should the Falklands issue be
resolved during May, the president
may name a top-level negotiator
to develop the autonomy
talks and possibly try to bring the
talks to Washington. No pressure
on Israel is anticipated, some here
think, until a “decent interval"
passes from the Sinai trauma.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is
begin built up in such media
as Time magazine, with full-
page color advertising, and the
Public Broadcasting System’s
three-part documentary “Saudi
Arabia," touted as “a remarkable
achievement.”
Advocates of “realism" mock
Israel’s apprehension of Egypt’s
intentions. They point out
Egyptians do not want war and in
any case the Multinational Observer
Force (MOF) of 2,600 personnel
stands between Egypt and Israel
This perception raised eyebrows
among those who thought Camp
David called for peace and normal
relations and not merely
absence of war because of the MOF
and Egypt’s temporary military
conditions.
Meanwhile, Israel's government
had declared it will make no
further land concessions and Begin
cautioned pressures to do so will be
countered. Defense Minister Ariel
Sharon said settlements are part of
Israel’s security and they will
increase and be consolidated. In a
partially interrupted television
interview, Begin said he had “no
reason whatsoever” to have
“anxiety" over the withdrawal.
